IMO: the "plain text" (the clean HTML) version should be the basis, and you should do a progressive enhancement for adding FX and fun decorations (and keeping always usable and readable the website). It seems to be actually the opposite : complex design ("full site") and degraded "text version" for people dont have your specific target setup.
TBH, the clean HTML version is more comfortable to read, even on my big screen with high speed connection and processor. 😄

@gub well, it’s an art project, and the way it looks and behave is really important for us – a plain and simply usable website wouldn’t be enough for what we want to create and convey. But, hey, we really thank your feedback because it made it clear to us that there are visitors who don’t really appreciate the aesthetic aspect of it, but still want to have access to the content and tech elements of the project.
