When I took office I set out a clear ambition: to make Europe an AI continent.

One year on from the launch of the AI Continent Action Plan, key elements are already being delivered, from the rollout of 19 AI Factories, to the proposal of the AI Omnibus.

Building Artificial Intelligence the European way

When I became the Commission’s Executive Vice-President in charge of technology, I came with a vision of making Europe an artificial intelligence (AI) continent. I could see the EU’s AI Act - the first of its kind in the world - was already paving the way for trust and excellence in Europe, but Euro

@HennaVirkkunen what does "AI Factories" even mean? i believe if your mandate is to govern, the words you say should at least make sense. right now you sound like a buzzword markov chain.
@yetzt Alas! the Commission uses the term #aifactory since 2024 for this: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/ai-factories, in short it is a way to help the existing, publicly-funded HPC hubs in creating ecoystems to support the adoption of Machine Learning in EU. I agree with you that "AI Factories" is confusing, uses the "AI" acronym we have come to deprecate, and conflicts with the way Red Hat and NVIDIA use the same term (for a software stack or "a specialized computing infrastructure") ... but meanwhile there are 19 of these "factories" up and running in the EU, for real!
AI Factories

AI Factories leverage the supercomputing capacity of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to develop trustworthy cutting-edge generative AI models.

Shaping Europe’s digital future
@yetzt I also agree that although @HennaVirkkunen is a laudable effort to establish a presence in the fediverse for the Executive Vice-President of the Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy (wow! let's shorten it to EVPCTSSD), whoever runs the account just reposts and does not really care to interact here, although on fedi they have twice the followers than on #bluesky. Speaking of which, the same post there (https://bsky.app/profile/hennavirkkunen.bsky.social/post/3mj2yw4qdpc2b) also gained a single comment, rightfully questioning the EVPCTSSD about their use of Linkedin for long-form content ... I am really curious to see if she reacts there at least!

Bluesky Social
@yetzt @HennaVirkkunen ... which in turn made me curious to see what sort of interactions they got on X, where the account has 10x the followers (!!!) than here. Well, the same post got a mere two replies, one (https://xcancel.com/jefferinc/status/2042252836696703099#m) rather ironically inviting Grok in the conversation, which predictably produced a totally off-topic reply about comparing horsepower, whereas the EU "AI Factories" effort is more concerned on networking than #GFlops.
