Anyone seen a laser printer that decides to fade off the end of pages? My Brother printer does that for maybe 1 page in 5.

It has plenty toner, the drum is clean, as is the corona wire. It's not a driver thing. I'm using good quality paper. I'm going to have to take this to The Printer Wizard, I just know it

oh well, off to The Printer Wizard it is ...

Printer Wizard found out it's the duplexer. Prints and copies fine on one side.

Didn't charge me a thing.

@scruss They sound like great folks to aim business at. Thank you.
@MikeStok please do. They sells official Brother refurb printers. They only sell ink, toner and paper otherwise. It's a little place just at Kennedy and Progress
@scruss I've seen this with weird counterfeit toner cartridges on big HPs from the 90s, but it sounds like your problem is different 🤔
@nina_kali_nina this is real Brother toner, shipped directly from Brother Canada
@scruss you shake the shit out of the toner yet?
@scruss just side to side, don't tilt it. sometimes if the printer gets tilted all the toner puddles up on one side.

@gloriouscow I have gently shaken it, but uneven toner would put a horizontal fade on this landscape page. So this isn't uneven toner

Printer can do a perfect 100% black drum dot test

@scruss oh right, that sailed right over my head lol
@scruss huh, being at the ass end of the page does throw out a whole lot of theories there. odd.
@scruss
Speaking as an amateur professional printer handler: I'd take this to The Wizard.
@ozzelot Yeah, he's good. Just got to get off hold on another call

@scruss The wizard often must visit our workplace. He likes those who do not curiously peer under his hands. Suffice to say he does not like me so much.

(And of course the wizard and the council above him would be all too happy if we stopped all this nonsense and just rented the newer magical printing machines, but that is not our wish, so the wizard will have to keep coming as long as parts are available.)

@ozzelot this is a different wizard. He will keep printers going forever. He will happily suggest the best way to work around toner lock chips. He refills cartridges. He charges far too little.

I too know my way around printers, a little (a few years in pre-press) but I do not presume anything in front of the wizard

@scruss I know not my way around the big office copy molochs, unless the senior amateur copy moloch handler or the wizard tell me some spells. I dare not ponder these machines much.

Now 3D printers? Hell yes, love a good precise moving plastic melter.

@scruss this is towards the end of the page? Sounds to me like a timing issue. Not sure how exactly LED/laser printers work, but the drum is charged, then exposed with light, which destroys the charge? Then toner is applied and transferred and then baked?
So either the corona wire can’t hold up the voltage (broken high voltage driver?) or the toner doesn’t get properly baked to the paper? (Broken heater circuit?)
@scruss
I usually take the toner cart. out and give it a side-to-side shake. Mostly works.

@scruss

Is it always the end - last part of the page to print? It's never a band partway through the page, or at the start?

@scruss Almost like the printer stops doling out toner a little too early. I wonder if that's the root cause.
@scruss Dang, and I just bought one of these last week! Hope mine behaves better (so far it's been fine even in duplex mode.)
@nosrednayduj this has had many pages, and is on its second drum. Most people get through many cartridges, but not many get to a second drum
