Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code and Misunderstands Basic Machine Learning Concepts https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/sam-altman-technical-coding šŸ˜‚

I think there's a small but real chance he's eventually remembered as a Bernie Madoff- or Sam Bankman-Fried-level scammer.

Is anyone surprised by this?

Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code and Misunderstands Basic Machine Learning Concepts

The OpenAI CEO reportedly confuses basic coding and machine learning terms, numerous insiders have admitted.

Futurism
@nixCraft Small? I'd say it's a coin toss at the very least. The Worldcoin scammer is seeking unconscionable money and power. We know what he is. The question is whether he'll do the same amount of damage as the most famous scammers of all time.
@nixCraft no. Another case of "always has been"
@nixCraft I don't think is important that he can code, but should definitely understand ML and DL. I mean that's basic imho as a CEO of GPT company
@nixCraft You don’t have to understand, you just have to believe.
@nixCraft
The truth is that it doesn't surprise me, because of that guy, my PC that cost me a lot of sacrifice to build was only able to install 16Gb of RAM and 4 4Gb modules and make intensive use of ZRAM, the only thing I could buy.

@nixCraft

At this point, it seems pretty obvious that Altman is a grifter. I wonder when/if the rest of the world is going to figure it out?

@nixCraft is that guy even real? All the evidence I've seen so far points to him being a computer. Remind me once he passes a basic Turing test.
@samuel @nixCraft Being empty on the inside does not automatically make one a computer.

@nixCraft conversely I can code but I suck at lying and hyping up things that aren't all that.

We all have our skills, and I prefer mine even if they pay less

@nixCraft

Not a surprise at all...

@nixCraft I'm exactly as surprised as I was when it was clear Musk was nothing more than a conman, same with Trump, Thiel, I would argue the vast majority of tech CEOs at this point are more grift than tech.

@nixCraft in every photo I've seen of him, he looks like a child caught in a lie and awkwardly trying to think of how to get out of it

It's pure bullshit all the way and people are starting wake up to it

@nixCraft Altman always had the face of a confused dog to me. No thought exists behind those eyes.
@nixCraft Sometimes just being at the right place and at the right time is enough.
@nixCraft I'd wager none of the heads of these companies are particularly competent programmers or computer scientists. They are business ghouls and grifters. That is their job.

@nixCraft

He’s a snake oil salesman, a con man. To be frank this is the main skill set of CEOs.

@nixCraft why do I have this feeling of "not shocked at all"??
@nixCraft a lot of founders are very detached from what they're selling
@nixCraft I am not fond of Sam Altman. But this is an ugly hit piece.
@worik @nixCraft ??? what’s wrong with you šŸ˜†
@nixCraft completely unsurprising. If CEOs needed to be smart, we'd have far fewer of them.
@nixCraft I'm definitely not. It's dispiriting to see how firmly entrenched is the notion that a top-level tech executive must necessarily be one of the world's greatest geniuses, a man (and it's ALWAYS a man) whose opinions on all subjects are instantly judged to be newsworthy and published worldwide for the edification and enlightenment of the people. Scam artists like Sam Altman have been allowed to set themselves up as the sole custodians and evangelists for the future. Oh sure, they must apply gigantic pressures to tech journalists in order to obtain only the most fawning and uncritical coverage—but was it ever necessary for tech journalism to yield to such pressures?
@mxchara @nixCraft Not always men, there is Elizabeth Holmes, but mostly men.

@nixCraft

During the dot-com boom I noticed something about almost all of the heads of VCs, investment funds, and high-value tech firms, etc. I met: They weren't smart -- they were sneaky.

They reached their positions not because of technical or leadership brilliance, but because they were great at fucking over the smart people and forcing themselves into positions they were wholly incapable of and then setting conditions that made removing them impossible. I assume it only got worse since.

@nixCraft This is my surprised face: 😐

Seriously, did anyone actually not already realize this? Every single person pushing to pretend LLMs are "general AI" either has no clue how a LLM actually works or is trying to make a quick buck no matter the damage it inevitably causes when they don't actually work like that.

As far as I can tell, all the heads of each of the so called "AI" corporations started off in the first category, but also the second at the same time... They have no clue how any of it works, just how to sell it.

@nixCraft Not surprised. Most of the pale skinned business leaders here in the US don’t have any actual skills aside from spending large amounts of money in record time on themselves. Most didn’t finish or barely finished college. They aren’t exemplars of human achievement in any realms.

@nixCraft

See my top pinned post and note the date.

@nixCraft if he was around for the original Enron he’d think that AskJeeves was actual God in a box
@nixCraft if CEO knowing how to do the actual work or understand the technical concepts of the product, pretty much every single one since the MBA/ex McKinsey CEO takeover occurred will have to give up their position. About to be trillionaire fElon has shown this is the way to go now for at least couple of generations if kids growing up in STEAM and the younger generation of execs are are learning from the best like fElon & Thiel etc.

@nixCraft Absolutely not surprised. Most of these very huge "tech" figures are just like most other CEOs. They're sociopaths benefiting from the abilities of others. SBF, Sam Altman, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and many others.

They might have business savvy, and they might be good at mobilizing workforces, but they aren't tech minds.

The Bill Gates-es of the world, who actually are competent programmers while heading software companies, are comparatively rare (regardless of everybody's opinions on Microsoft and Windows, Bill Gates is not a terrible programmer, and he can leap chairs with style too).

@nixCraft Altman can visibly barely wipe himself. He has the stupidest-looking countenance I've ever seen on a human being.
@nixCraft Don't believe his coworkers
@nixCraft I'm sure he has enough cryptocurrency stashed away to buy a pardon from Trump.
@nixCraft Do CEOs ever have an idea about their job? I feel like it’s in the job description to not know.

@nixCraft

That kind-of explains the blind adherence to ā€œscale is all you needā€.

I can sort-of excuse it from Hinton and LeCunn, covered in scars as they are from 40 years of symbolic AI vs connectionism battles, but the new generation at the head of OpenAI and Anthropic both seem to be a billion-dollar foolish in their pursuit of ā€œscaleā€
