Researching cartomancy and stumbling inadvertently over the history of Tarot cards used for divination.

It's a bit disheartening when you read "pretty much all claims of any occult links were debunked as made up". I guess that's good PR to sell them cards..

But if it's all made up, why do they seemingly work?
I've done tarot readings for friends in the past so.. was that all just me doing good guesswork?

.. and if it's not just guesswork - who defines what makes up a silly trick and what's maybe actually a very personal kind of ritual?

@heals for me, it's not the history that makes it valid, it's whether it works - and tarot does work, at least as a tool for reflecting on situations and occasionally hinting at future outcomes (though I don't believe the future is fated - that's another discussion tho!)

A lot of 19th and 20th century magic was obsessed with everything being ancient and mysterious, which unfortunately generated a lot of misinfo.

Is it guesswork? I think it's a combination of psychology, symbolism and actual magical stuff we don't fully understand. I don't know if the tool itself is the important thing though, more the connection made between the reader, the cards, and whoever is being read for?

@therivercrow I couldn't agree more!!

I'll still cleanse and charge my decks along with my crystals though -- because I'm like that and I enjoy giving meaning to full moon nights! 😈 🧙

@heals i have answers for this actually if you are interested!
@shoofle answer away, that's why shared my mental rambles in the first place :)
@heals I think of tarot cards as a means to probe your subconscious by a random stimulus - give a random input, see how you feel about it, use that to figure out how you're feeling about something on levels you're not consciously aware of. And we have a lot of understanding of things that we're not aware of!
@heals add that to cold reading, and hot reading, and the normal startling effectiveness of random chance, and you get a divinatory practice!
