I held a distinguished visiting chair at a college for eight years of very successful teaching. Never understood the voicemail, never once listened to my messages. The message light on the phone blinked for eight years.
@fesshole The Nobel Committee were gutted.
@fesshole Arguably, the entire point of becoming a distinguished anything is having someone to take most of your calls for you, right?
@fesshole I heqrd that the guy that invented #quicksort was famous for never being seen using a computer and having his emails printed out for him.

@abeorch @fesshole I don’t know about that, but it’s funny you should mention him:

(Sir Charles Antony Richard Hoare) => null pointer exception. I am saddened to learn that Tony Hoare, the #Computing pioneer who invented what is now called Hoare Logic, the quicksort algorithm and a bunch of other things including the *null reference*, which he famously called his “billion dollar mistake”, died last month on 5 March 2026 aged 92. #computers #algorithms #programming #ComputerScience #RIP #CSP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Hoare

@fesshole @whybird He was on the #BBCRadio4 obiturary programme Last Words the other night as I drove back up to Huddersfield
@fesshole I adopt the same policy for anyone who sends me a voice message on WhatsApp - completely ignored - I am not going to waste five minutes of my time listening to a rambling message that could have been a one line text.
@fesshole @baoigheallain Never underestimate the value of tone in voice messages amd calls. The amount of confusion and frustration I am dealing with right now that could be avoided if people juat picked up the phone and actually spoke.
Back when I was teaching, I made sure that my office was listed incorrectly in the university directory. Only the most persistent students managed to find me outside lectures.
@fesshole “held a distinguished visiting chair” statements made up by the absolutely deranged
@fesshole If it was important enough I imagine you heard about it. When it wasn't, well done!
