🎶 Waddling along near automobiles..

The pavement is warming up. Every year, Porcupines line the shoulder of the highways, run over by drivers. Could have been a child, drive more careful. Also, next month is Turtle season. #DriveResponsibly #Porcupine #Nature

@Rasta @NormanDunbar Build critter under / over passes. too.
@donhawkins @Rasta Definitely. There are way too many dead Badgers and Roe Deer around here by the roads.

@NormanDunbar @donhawkins
In many places, they have those bridges or tunnels for big animals, but not little ones. And, you can't coral a Porcupine, but I did make a pet of one, but he refused to come out of that tree, so I had to take his leash off.

Do you know what it costs, and takes to get a bridge or tunnel? In BC, Canada, I encountered something close to my heart, Turtle migration. A big boy pond on the right, and a girl pond on the left, and 100 turtles crossing a highway every year and not even a warning sign. And people go out of their way to hit them on the shoulder. Not even a sign or speed reduction from full highway speed. I wrote some minister at the time, Natural Resources or such, about what I saw on one day, maybe 50 turtles squashed. Heartbreaking

@Rasta @NormanDunbar @donhawkins
My big heartbreak is for toads
If it can be done without risking my life I stop and take them across

@Pierrette @donhawkins @NormanDunbar

DId you know, if you kiss one, they turn into a handsome prince and some make you hallucinate LOL

@Pierrette @donhawkins @Rasta I used to have four North American Bullfrogs, which I raised from tadpoles. I kept them for years. When they eventually died, I had them made into a pair of open toad sandals! 😀

Ok, I'm joking about the sandals, not about my frogs. I'm a big fan of reptiles and amphibians.

@Pierrette @NormanDunbar @donhawkins

I do that with turtles. I brought one in my motorbike saddlebag from Ontario once

@Rasta @NormanDunbar I dunno the cost, & of course that is always the essential element.

I am in Oregon & here is a link to Oregon’s “official” approach

https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/GeoEnvironmental/Pages/Wildlife.aspx

Oregon Department of Transportation : Wildlife Crossings : Geo-Environmental : State of Oregon

Incorporating wildlife crossings into highway project planning improves highway safety and increases habitat connectivity.

@donhawkins @NormanDunbar

You know, you see real money and effort in Oregon, and no consistancy in the next state. We were disturbed, because we'd never seen possums, to see them dead every half mile from Missouri to Arkansas, and guess which dead one ahead is a possum and which is a cooter turtle

@Rasta @NormanDunbar Politicians in Arkansas eat road kill 😎
@donhawkins @NormanDunbar
It's on the preferred freezer list for RFKjr
Furry Curry and other road kill recipes.
@donhawkins Don't get me wrong, if I came upon (or damaged my vehicle) a deer kill, I'd consider keeping meat.
I carried a sharp hunting knife, just in case.
@Rasta @donhawkins In the UK it's allowed to keep freshly killed animals and bird for meat. But only if the vehicle in front of you hit the animal. You cannot keep your own kill, to stop people deliberately running animals down I suppose.

@NormanDunbar @donhawkins

Yes, there's a lot of people deliberately hitting deer. Many of them die, because deer cause a lot of damage in a strike. But, I;m not telling anyone if I hit one

@Rasta @donhawkins My step dad hit one, a Roe, at speed in the old A9 road in Scotland. Wrote off the deer sadly, but just knocked out a headlight capsule in his Renault 30.

Lucky lucky man.

@NormanDunbar @donhawkins
A baptist minister told me, if you turn your wheel sharply as you hit them, they roll to the side and do less or no damage. I always hope that my Dump Van will hit one before June.. that's when that van reaches its end
@Rasta GOOD morning have been watching this lady in NB ..YTube who has porcupines come to their house and she feeds them apples ..had a place under steps built for protection in bad weather ND they are starting to get curious about whats in the house when meeting her at the door .. they even climb the railings to sit on top and watch the inside of house thru window .. one is brave enough to climb up her leg they help and remove kwill from face when happens
Husband is going to build them a shed away from house if they want somewhere protective ..hard to identify
@Lstn2urmama
I once had a pet Hedgehog, in Germany. Quills like a porcupine but no tail.
I had a porcupine for a pet for a short while. I used to walk it on a leash but once, he climbed a tree and refused to come down and I had to take his harness off
@Rasta am very curious as to how got that harness and leash on it !
@Lstn2urmama Leather gloves. But they only Quill you if alarmed.
@Rasta have seen when they turn the back to her and suddenly do not recognize her or she encounters a new one she thinks she knows ..
