It's a beautiful morning in Zagreb! Welcome to the inaugural run on Slovenske železnice's new service from Ljubljana to Zagreb!

Welcome to Zagreb multi phase Stadler FLIRT!!

I think this is the first time ever a train on regular passenger service traveled from Ljubljana on 3kV DC, switched to 25kV AC power in Dobova and continued on to Zagreb!!

Okay, so what's going on and why is this important?

Up until today, to travel between Zagreb and Ljubljana you had to book a seat on one of the 3 daily pairs of trains on long distance services (to Villach, Stuttgart, Zürich etc..) These trains are fine, but Ljubljana is just a stop on them.

Meanwhile, the two cities are very close and there's no good reason why there shouldn't be extra service here. Slovenian railways run a ton of trains to Dobova, 20 minutes away from Zagreb main station. Why not continue them on to Zagreb??
Up until recently, there was a relatively good reason - electric trains couldn't run between Slovenia and Croatia without changing locomotives because of voltage difference. But nowadays there are multi phase trains that can run on both! More about this here: https://blog.vladovince.com/the-history-and-the-future-of-cross-border-rail-at-dobova-station/
The history and the future of cross border rail at Dobova station

Earlier this year, I wrote about a rare occurrence at Dobova, a border station between Slovenia and Croatia: a few HŽPP local trains crossed over from Croatia into Slovenia to pick up passengers going…

So starting today, Slovenske železnice are extending two daily local trains that used to go from Ljubljana to Dobova all the way to Zagreb, giving passengers more options! That's two more pairs of trains between two cities!

For now, these are still local trains, making stops along the way. But even as such, they are competitive with existing service, making most of their runs in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. That's because these long distance services still change locomotives in Dobova (a whole another story)
This train departs in about 10 minutes. I'll report back on how well this works along the way. But nonetheless, this is still very exciting and sort of historic - hopefully a turning point in rail connectivity between 🇸🇮 and 🇭🇷!
All aboard!

We're running express to Zaprešić, the only intermediate stop in Croatia on this service. In the meantime, a bit about ticketing.

Neither SŽ (🇸🇮) nor HŽPP (🇭🇷) added each other's stations to their regular ticketing systems, so you couldn't book this online.

Usually ÖBB (🇦🇹) can sell you tix between Slovenia and Croatia, but they don't have this service available (yet?)

I went to the ticket booth and they sold me a paper ticket (€9! Good deal).

I asked the (HŽPP) conductor what would happen if I didn't do that? She said it's annoying they didn't add each other's stops to their system, so she would have sold me a ticket to Savski Marof (one of the last stops in 🇭🇷)

I would then get the SŽ (🇸🇮) ticket from Dobova to Ljubljana.

Good to know. I'll try this for my return trip. However, buying tix that way will be more expensive - €9.60 for SŽ (🇸🇮) and €1.71 for HŽPP (🇭🇷) vs a total €9 when bought at the booth.

Oh hey it's the EuroNight from Zürich. That's one of the long distance services normally running between Ljubljana and Zagreb
The power switch from 25kV AC to 3kV literally took seconds
Okay someone fucked up and the train did not stop at Dobova for 7 minutes as scheduled. They left after like 30 seconds so they literally drove the train back to the station. Growing pains?
Lol it's good that they did go back because a ton of kids were waiting for this train in Dobova on another platform.
And we're now speeding along towards Ljubljana! Some growing pains but man this is something else. Normal rail between two EU countries, no border bullshit with locomotives. Fuck yes.
Not much else to say about this train now that it's making the regular local LPV run to Ljubljana. It follows the beautiful Sava river and you wouldn't know anything is different about this train, except it's very different!
My handy 1990/1991 timetable accompanies me on this trip. We're not there yet in the total number of services, but at least on this one line we're actually living in the future. A trip like this, running all electric and frictionless through Dobova, is finally something new and improved!

Having just returned from my beautiful but heartbreaking 3 day rail trip across Bosnia, I'm full of emotions.

The trip I'm on right now is what travel between neighbors should be like. After 34 years, at least this one connection is getting back on track.

There's another new local cross border service between 🇸🇮 and 🇭🇷 that started today - HŽPP started 4 new pairs of trains between Zabok (🇭🇷) and Rogatec (🇸🇮).

I think that this replaces the SŽ cross border service (2 pairs I think) that went from Celje to Đurmanec https://mastodon.vladovince.com/@mejs/114868822302654089

And with a 5 minute delay we're in Ljubljana. At 2 hours and 30 minutes this isn't a high speed service, but it's a great start.
It also shows what a waste of time the locomotive switch at Dobova is for the long distance trains. Our train made 22 stops (!) and it still makes it to Ljubljana within 10 minutes of the fastest long distance service that makes three stops.
Obligatory Ljubljana multi modal terminal progress report
So I forgot to tell you a funny thing that happened when I was buying my ticket in Zagreb. The ticket seller told me I would have to switch trains in Dobova (I knew I wouldn't). I asked him if he's sure about that? He said he didn't really know. I told him I would report back 😂
A fun afternoon in Ljubljana, using the excellent Bicikelj bike share
Time to catch my local train back to Zagreb. Love to see this LPV train on the board so casually. Like it's the most normal thing which, as of tomorrow, it will be

Time to board the Stadler FLIRT back to Zagreb. I was hoping for a double decker KISS, but alas. Maybe next time.

I intentionally didn't buy a paper ticket. Let's see how it goes with a SŽ and HŽPP combo mobile tix.

What perfect afternoon light on return to Zagreb

And a special report for @jon

Here's what's left of Melania's statue near Sevnica

Ok now the question is do I get off at Zaprešić and switch to a train to my local stop in Zagreb or do I go to the main station?

For the sake of completion I'll go to the main station, but I'm making a mental note for the future. There's a pretty good 5 minute connection there for local Zagreb trains.

Btw, Slo železnice updated their timetable to reflect the Zaprešić stop after I messaged them earlier today!

I caught the 🇸🇮 3kV DC to 🇭🇷 25kV AC switch in Dobova this time. Nice!

And welcome back to Zagreb! Thanks for following along folks. The final verdict: fantastic!

This is a no fuss, common sense service. Add more, extend regional trains, then run multi phase locos to Zagreb and run the damn HŽPP trains to Dobova. The future is coming and for once this is a good one.

Ha this is very fun, Slovenske železnice is advertising the new cross border services on its homepage https://potniski.sz.si/
@mejs Yes yes, in their e-mail to subscribers Slovenske železnice were also listing what to see and do in Đurmanec, ha ha.
@olokolo haha that's kind of random since this new service now goes all the way to Krapina and Zabok, and meanwhile SŽ trains ran to Đurmanec until this week. But now I subscribed to their newsletter 😁
@mejs Đurmanec – checked on Easter Sunday! In line with the holidays everything was closed, not even a single bar operating. Well, there was a talkative cat at the train station :)
The problem was going back to Ljubljana – when one arrives from Đurmanec to Celje using the SŽ train connection there is a 2,5 hour wait to continue to Ljubljana by a bus substituting the train! Bad planning, we didn't even check the connection because we assumed it can't be that bad :)

@olokolo oh darn! I was there on a workday last summer and the grocery store was popping hahah

I hope it was a fun day out nonetheless. I love your Brompton colors!
