"Why #Nutella?"

Because paste consistency food is great in weightlessness

Peanut butter is also loved by astronauts

Soft tortillas too: no crumbs floating around

And all these foods don't need refrigeration

Finally, you need calorie dense foods since storage is at a premium

Eat like an astronaut and have a Nutella tortilla

🫩😶‍🌫️

@Kaiz

😅

Space cuisine has some areas for improvememt

@benroyce @Kaiz no wonder the shitter can't handle it
@benroyce Nutella contains palm oil, though. 😭

@Eetschrijver

eww

i don't eat Nutella. i never got into it

i am a peanut butter fanatic though

but you knew that already 😅

@benroyce Oh, thanks for reminding me! 🙃
@Eetschrijver @benroyce
We use this one: no palm oil and more hazelnuts. And better taste.
@sjaakkeuvelaar @Eetschrijver @benroyce Same here. Far better taste and a far better company.

@sjaakkeuvelaar @Eetschrijver @benroyce

wait wat?
<grabs jar and looks at ingredients>
o no

@sjaakkeuvelaar @Eetschrijver @benroyce

Bonne Maman, the brand that I thought only made delicious jam (safe from home made), also produces hazelnut paste? 🤩

@McWabbit @Eetschrijver @benroyce
They do.

(And now I wonder if I could make the hazelnut paste myself…)

@benroyce Today I learned about the floating 💩 problems in the #Apollo10.

(OK, I know it's not exactly the same as #Nutella, but hey.)

@Blogfeedser EWWW 😂
@benroyce If I'm correct, back then they carried personal poo bags with them and apparently the seals on these bags weren't exactly of Tupperware quality. 🙈

@Blogfeedser

imagine if they jettisoned it in space

little freeze dried bits of astronaut poo orbiting the earth forever

@benroyce A friend of mine was sailing to the Marquesas from San Diego. Got pulled over by the Mexican Coast Guard. They searched the boat and opened cabinet after cabinet filled with tortillas. Great to have on board for a 30 day passage for all the same reasons they work in space.

@mikej yes!

food limitations and compromises in space are similar to the age of sail

@benroyce they don't seem to worry about carrying useless weight.

@DC4DD

packing for a trip, deciding on what to bring or not is always a thing. and then you come home and wonder why you packed half the crap you bought with you

@benroyce Amused that some of the most expensive meals in history (according to cost of mass lifted higher in gravity well, naturally) are poor-people staples. PB+J burritos are well known round this household.
@log i don't think they'll be having soup though 😅
@benroyce Could probably manage a sticky sort of chili, stew, gumbo, or chowder. So long as it is gluelike in its propensity to not spawn little liquid droplets.

@benroyce

Bad diet for shitting though. Our gut works best with bulky low energy density food. Peristalsis requires something to work on! Also your gut needs walking around and general motion to work right. I bet lots of digestive problems up there.

@tomjennings

oof

constipation being the biggest problem, i am guessing

@benroyce
No, thanks to Nutella - food allergy.
That would get ugly fast!
Also great for camping!
@benroyce It's a camping stalwart in our household. For largely the same reasons. Not including the weightlessness, obvs.
@BonehouseWasps sort of like camping! assuming you're hiking, space is at a premium
@benroyce
I used to make pb&j wraps with fresh tortillas. Such a tasty delight. 😋
@benroyce "Nutella tortilla" sounds like punishment.
@Axomamma @benroyce I believe it's pronounced "Nutella,."

@Axomamma

Positive:

You get to see the dark side of the moon

Negative:

Your cuisine seems like something a toddler would devise

@benroyce I'm struggling to understand why they're eating this. I thought I'd read yesterday that they had all kinds of fancy food never before taken into space. They're reduced to Nutella on a tortilla?

@Axomamma

maybe it's like backup food

it is probable they have entire panels of nutritionists and food scientists consulting on this topic

@benroyce Everything today makes me want to break things. Nutella tortillas should be low on my list but I'm feeling like this is just one more idiotic thing we're expected to get excited about to distract from the Republican party's destruction of the US and our relationships with every other country on the planet.
@benroyce @lisamelton *eyes my fresh jar of Nutella in my cupboard* 🤤
@benroyce Nutella is mostly sugar and oil, with very little hazelnuts or chocolate. If you have a chance, try Nocciolata by Rigoni di Asiago. Far, far superior and (slightly) healthier. If you have a powerful blender, you can also make your own.

@fazalmajid @benroyce

Back in the day when I could eat things like that, I used to get jars of hazelnut butter and stir cocoa and a little honey in, on demand; usually doing so on already-warm toast. Taking time to work with the ingredients improves the flavour imo.

@benroyce nutilla?

@brad

can't be tortella, that's a kind of moss

so you win the naming
