Gazing up at the magnificent Norman architecture in the nave of Durham Cathedral this afternoon.
Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral also contains the tombs of St Cuthbert and St Bede.
No matter how many times I visit, I am always in awe of this amazing sacred space.

@davidallan a stunning place! Do they still charge for the photo permit? 😊 (fun memories from holidays ages ago when I tried to cut a deal for a better German translation 😁)
@skyr In recent times, they have become much more relaxed and allow photography (check website for details). They also allow you to take in your well-behaved four-legged friends!
@davidallan yes, built by the Norman's just a generation after the 'harrowing of the North' in turn just a few years after the invasion, and next to the castle. All designed to oppress and subdue the region. It's meant to be imposing on the landscape and the people, a case of 'look what we're capable of, we've even got God on our side'.
@davidallan That's beautiful David and well handled exposure! Not easy in those locations
