I often say that my most meaningful learning started after I got my PhD, when I was so craving the chance to learn about life, existence, and broader ways of knowing. I intentionally learned from spiritual teachers, but less intentionally began doing fieldwork with elders of several nations.
I didn't expect to feel so challenged, expanded, and matured by what I learn by listening to them, but I also didn't expect to laugh so much and so hard, nor to gain so much peace.
We all know that elder women will tell you to stay away from m^n at all costs, but beyond that, they move through their days guided by an internal sense of value and intention, and relate nothing to the judgements of other people. It's the lack of fear that opens up an enormous space for love.
What has surprised me the most about these years spent with various elders has been the clarity and incisiveness of their priorities. Now, I'm talking about elders who work the land, who do art, who craft, who read and listen to the music that only they like, who don't watch the news much, who are embodying their own weirdness.
I actually don't think we need help learning to love, to be loving. I think we need permission from others to divest from fear. And being surrounded by people who have come to refuse fear is incredibly freeing. I want for all of us to release superficiality and material obsessions at a much younger age, so that we can be in our worth and our power, and invest in the world the elders know we need to build.
