#Magawa was a southern giant pouched #rat born at Sokoine University of Agriculture in #Tanzania in 2013

Magawa was trained by #APOPO, the #Belgium nonprofit that trains #rats and dogs to detect #mines

In #Cambodia Magawa became the most successful #landmine sniffing rat ever, clearing 23 hectares/56 acres, detecting 71 #landmines and 38 other explosives

Magawa died in 2022

On April 3, for International #Mine Awareness Day, Cambodia honored Magawa with a stone statue

@benroyce I think a great number of humans could emulate this life of service

@benroyce Vilken historia!

@SusWAndersson

@benroyce
What a great story - so many good elements to think on - thank you so much for sharing this. 🙏🏻
@benroyce thanks to you I learned my country teaches important things to rats. Makes me proud to live here. Especialy as I think someone I will not name said once that Brussels, Belgium capital is a rat hole. Yes it is sir. A rat hole of choice and talent. 😎

it's a good story:

they also train rats to detect tuberculosis, because rats are faster than medical labs. sometimes, the rats make false positives. but then, the person develops tuberculosis anyways, because the rats can detect what medical labs don't detect yet

@benroyce These detection rats are awesome. I saw a detection "exhibition" and it was incredible.
