Finally beginning to see the bigger changes I expected from giving up alcohol. One year in. It takes that long. Mainly physical, but also psychological.

Although I miss some aspects of drinking I can now clearly see the benefits of stopping: but I haven’t turned into an anti-drink crusader. I feel bizarrely at peace with it. I’d been drinking a long time, but like giving up tobacco it’s never too late I guess.

@wlukewindsor Never too late, no matter how many tries it takes.
@wlukewindsor How regular did you drink?
@ohjames all the time, not quite an alcoholic I guess as no withdrawal, but nearly every day
@wlukewindsor That's quite regular. I guess that amount takes an effect on your body long term as it has to process the alcohol out of the body all the time. So great you stopped drinking and feel healthier now.
@ohjames the effects on brain and body chemistry are huge: and the gut biome too (this is why stopping drinking can have unpredictable effects on weight apparently)
@wlukewindsor Also alcohol is basically compressed fluid calories.
@ohjames most people put on weight when they stop after while (after initially losing weight) because it makes the gut more efficient (and also because some people eat more)
