Let's start the week with a simple message from UN Women.

Stop telling women how to live their life!

The continued focus of the media on telling women what to do reflects a wide-spread sexism in global societies.... it won't be stoped abruptly, but behind much prejudice is this assumed male right.

So, my friends, if you find yourself telling a women how to live their life ask yourself: have I the right to be offering unasked-for 'guidance' or 'advice'?

#women #politics #feminism

@ChrisMayLA6 The worst part is that the women accept it. We must raise our daughters to resist.
@Irmgard @ChrisMayLA6
And our sons to understand and accept this as normal.

@Irmgard @ChrisMayLA6 that is not 'the worst part', like at all. The reasons people APPEAR to you to accept persecution, discrimination and prejudice are many and complex.

The worst part? Is that any of that bigotry exists and affects us. The worst part is men who create, uphold and benefit from it daily. Who avoid consequence.

Raise your sons to respect other human beings, including those of different genders, to not hate and punch down at them, to be better.
To resist and undo patriarchy.

And stop blaming women for being victims of misogyny.

Men will never change if their mothers raise them that way. Women must change. Men who think they are more valuable than women also despise their mothers. What does this mean? Raise your son to be a valuable person who respects and values โ€‹โ€‹women!
@noodlemaz @ChrisMayLA6
@Irmgard @ChrisMayLA6 where are fathers in all that??
Why are the people who are suffering everyday oppression the ones you think are fully responsible?! Bullshit.
You are part of the problem. Men and misogyny need changing. Whatever women do, if men won't respect us, you'll call us the problem. Fuck that.

@ChrisMayLA6

Hey, Women!

Sorry for all I've ever done to keep you down or make you uncomfortable. I'm as guilty as anyone.

I hope today is better than yesterday for each and every one of you.

Equality is something everyone deserves, in all forms.

F* the patriarchy. F* all hierarchies. F* tyranny.

@ChrisMayLA6
Completely agreed! But why not enhancing this on people instead only for women?

@SebastianGallehr @ChrisMayLA6 Because women get crapped on like this a lot more than men do?

For example, the removal of abortion rights in the US and also the removal of post birth/miscarriage treatments due to doctors being afraid of falling foul of anti-abortion laws.

The US at a federal and state level is telling women how they should live their lives and which indignities they have to accept.

This sort of thing happens the world over and is deeply ingrained in all societies.

@ChrisMayLA6
I'd say stop telling ANYONE how to do things...
Because you're nobody.
It's a serious lack of respect to tell someone how to do, say, or behave. Typical of arrogant ignoramuses.
@ChrisMayLA6 I am getting an "All people's lives matter" vibe from some of the answers. Yes you can't force anyone to live their life in a particular way, but women face SPECIFIC issues in this regard. There is no male equivalent of what is happening right now to women in countries like Afghanistan. Men are not directly affected by the abortion bans spreading over the USA. Men are not getting their penises cut off so they can be free of sexual temptation and come to their wife's bed in a pure state. Men are not subject to a daily barrage of misogyny and rape culture.
@SecondUniverse @ChrisMayLA6
Yes, some of the answers are very disappointing.
Misogyny and victim blaming are not welcome

@Sarahw @ChrisMayLA6 Maybe the men who are reacting so defensively can stop and ask themselves: "What am I defending?"

Unbelievable that a mild "let women be themselves" poster from the UN gets such an outraged reaction. Literally, what is there to disagree with?

@SecondUniverse @Sarahw @ChrisMayLA6 It is right that it is especially important to emphasize that all people including women (because of abortion/birth rights, forced marriage and so on in a lot of countries), but what's wrong with broadening it to all people?
@SecondUniverse @ChrisMayLA6 They're part of the issue, this is not about men's rights and while men do suffer under patriarchy they are not the targets of societal repression and rape culture on a daily basis like you say, there's no equality without equity and right now it's deeply biased against women in terms of the power structures we're talking about.
@ChrisMayLA6 versuche ich mir zu Herzen zu nehmen.

@ChrisMayLA6 But that could go for men as well...
Stop telling men:
How to dress
How to behave
How to speak
How to live their life

What is the mind blowing here ?

@TommyChristensen @ChrisMayLA6 Maybe because, in the vast majority of cases in the vast majority of countries, women are told these things significantly more frequently than men. And often not just told, but forced: anti-abortion legislation; female genital mutilation; policing of clothing and life-style...?

@MintSpies @ChrisMayLA6

Yes, I understand, and I didn't think that kind of treatment is okay, but that applies to all people - even animals for that matter.
I guess I just thought the message was a bit weak and without a clear address.. one could probably do better.. I think... UN is behind.. there are many talented people associated ..

@ChrisMayLA6

couldn't help myself

@ChrisMayLA6
Yes, I agree. Men should not tell our women what to do, how to dress, how to behave, how to speak, etc. Our females are their own intelligent beings and have a right to choose what is best for them.
However, some courteous advice, coaching, directions here and there, without being demanding or overbearing, should not be a problem. It will remain our female's decision in the end what to do.
@XaiGaiHua @ChrisMayLA6 Giving "advice and coaching", no matter how courteous, implies that you know better than the recipient. How patronising. As the poster says: don't.
@XaiGaiHua @ChrisMayLA6 ALL un-asked-for advice is criticism. Don't do it.
@ChrisMayLA6 Love the answers to these posts. So many candidates for muting + blocking.

@NudelnAlDente

Yes, its been an 'interesting' developing thread... not the discussion I was expecting to be frank

@ChrisMayLA6 A world without oppression is impossible under capitalism. Liberty, equality, fraternity โ€” bourgeois lies.
@ChrisMayLA6 some people in the replies seem to think that this request is directed only at men. It does not say that.
