To my knowledge, the choice of April 1st as the date the law went into effect was just a curiosity of timing rather than an intention to pre-empt traditionalist protests. Even so - the Netherlands did legalize gay marriage on April 1st, 2001, leading the world in human rights for LGBT folk! 🙏
