I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of pickguards.

Even if the shape looks cool, I'd rather see wood grain, texture. I'd rather have the feel of a natural material over plastic or acryllic.

Instead of a black synthetic pickguard, why not ebony or any other wood, even if it's got a black finish? How about metal that's been hit with flame to colorize it? Roll the edges, embed it, or bind it. Give me a good finger rest while you're at it!

I guess it's fine on plain woods. Those almost always get painted anyway. Alternatively, they could be carved, burned, or inlayed with stone.
