a decade ago i went through a long period where i had no friends, no money, no memory card for my ps1, and too much free time every night

one month, i sat down and played Final Fantasy VIII every night. because i had no memory card, the game was effectively in insta-permadeath mode: one bad decision in battle could kill the entire party.

that forced me to play very conservatively. i grinded every random encounter until my characters were overpowered for the area. this ensured that i'd never get accidentally ganked in battle. every night, i'd turn off the tv and leave the PSX on overnight.

after several weeks, i had made it about 40 hours into the game, and hit a nice cinematic reward cutscene. i sat back to enjoy the fmv: the party ran across a bridge, fleeing as the bridge disintegrated behind them. except it was weird: the party just stood there as the bridge collapsed.

......................

it was an *interactive* cutscene, and i was supposed to run the party the rest of the way myself.

the bridge collapsed, and they all died. the game over screen rolled.

i stood up, shut off the PSX for the first time in a month, and screamed

that was the last time i played FF8.

10 years later, i still don't have any friends or money, but i DO have a memory card.

is it time ff8? 🤔

@vga256 - you will demolish it, go go go

@vga256

I expected your story to go in a different direction, I assumed the game was gonna crash during that cutscene because the disc was scratched

@iyashikei_kris haha that happened with my FF7 disc 2 😭
@iyashikei_kris @vga256 I was also definitely expecting it to end because of something along those lines, or that the optical drive would give out after that prolonged use.

@vga256 ahahaha fuck that bridge

my friend and i have played ffviii so so much. it's pretty weird! i like it a lot. fond memories of getting hopelessly lost after each new story beat

@k4gi it's such an outrageously bad idea. i can't believe no one said to the team "Hey, maybe there should be an onscreen prompt here?"
@vga256 there's this spot in parasite eve (uses pretty much the same tech as ffviii) where directly after a boss battle you need to jump off a rooftop to avoid being blown up by a rocket, only the game just leaves you to figure out which way to go (it's to the external maintenance lift, not through the big whole in the roof or back in the door you came up through) and if u die u have to do the boss battle again, great stuff
@vga256 that's a choice only you can make, but I had a major part of FFVII spoiled for me (and my PC version kept crashing during the chocobo races) and I just... stopped playing. Finishing games is somewhat rare for me but I think that was one I could've gone all the way to the end.
@vga256 When I played Assassin's Creed 2, I put my controller down for a cutscene and missed the QTE to hug Leonardo DaVinci. I still feel awful. He was a good friend, even if it was just a video game. Taking this as my cue to replay and fix my mistake. (edit for spelling)

@vga256 I love FF8, flaws and all.

What I will say is that since enemies scale to your level, younger you inadvertently made the game harder. :P

@Haste haha i had no idea at the time!

@vga256 you invented streamer challenge runs two decades early. Kinda cool.

Sorry your run died.

Maybe time to play it the boring way finally. 😁

@vga256 Now I’m wondering if there’s a 90s RPG that *hasn’t* hurt you horribly….
@ThreeOhFour i can’t resist self mutilation
@vga256 I actually struggle to finish RPGs on consoles. I wish I understood why. I don’t think I’ve ever managed it once. And yet I love PC RPGs.
@ThreeOhFour me too. part of the horror with consoles are the painful save systems half of the time.
@vga256 Yeah and for me a lot of the ones I’ve tried have been JRPGs and the boss battles just go too long if you don’t pass them. If I sit through 40 minutes of a boss battles and then it changes forms and TPKs me then I don’t really have much interest in replaying it. I can do so many other things in 40 minutes.
@ThreeOhFour haha i had a mild spaz waiting for the 30-45 seconds for each spell/summon animation to finish playing, EVERY time i cast them. jrpg boss battle style gaming has to be one of the most tired genre mechanics that became a (global) standard in the past 20 years
@vga256 I have to assume it was inspired by big epic fight scenes in anime. But yes, I think hoping that people will have patience with that sort of thing is a bit optimistic.
@ThreeOhFour some day i'll shock the world with my 'poke boss with poisoned dagger and then sleep outside the dungeon for 3 weeks until it dies' based mechanics
@vga256 I mean I would be all in favour of that kind of system!

@vga256 Oh my God  It may indeed be time...

I played a friend's copy of FFVIII, but did have my own memory card. And at a certain point near the end I just wasn't engaged enough with the protagonists, stopped and didn't finish (or return) the game until (a mere) 2 years later  Which I see now is nothing 😂

Do it! You invented survival mode
@vga256 in FF3, there was a scene when the area where you were, was going to explode. Upon boarding the life-saving flying ship there was a prompt: 5 seconds left, leave now?
> OFC leave now!
Found out much later that if I would have waited for 2 more seconds, a team member who I thought was lost would have joined again. 😠

@vga256

Thats was a great accomplishment, I can imagine the frustration. The cutscenes in the game were amazing.

I only attempted this kind of thing with SNES pirated games that couldn't save the progress, DKC3 comes to mind, could never finish in one sitting.

And my pirated copy of FF8 froze in the middle of the 2nd or 3rd disc, also never finished. I want to try the Remaster on Switch

@vga256 Dive in and enjoy the story that was taken away from you! I wonder how FFVIII aged and if there are QoL improvement mods.
@ffaff i can say that, after 25+ years, the first hour is still absolutely terrible 😆
we'll see how much further i can get.
