They are the nearest thing the UK has to a wild turkey. Spectacular, large – sometimes aggressive to humans during the breeding season – the capercaillie appeared to be heading for extinction.

Confined to the pine forests of the Scottish Highlands, the birds have been struggling to survive a series of threats from predators to climate change. But it seems there are signs of hope.
