The mission timeline is tight. After the high-orbit checkout, the crew will head into the "Lunar Sphere of Influence."
Expect a brief period of radio silence when they pass behind the Moon. They aren't just passengers; Pilot Victor Glover will be performing manual piloting trials to see how Orion handles when "the stick" is in human hands. 🕹️👨🚀
We are on the verge of several historic milestones:
🌕 Victor Glover will be the first Black man to fly to the Moon.
🌕 Christina Koch will be the first woman.
🌕 Jeremy Hansen will be the first non-American (Canadian 🇨🇦) to leave Low Earth Orbit.
By April 6th, they are expected to break the distance record set by Apollo 13 as they loop around the lunar far side.
Current Status: The crew just completed the Perigee Raise Maneuver. This burn refined Orion's orbit, setting the stage for the Translunar Injection (TLI).
Fun Fact: Orion is currently orbiting roughly 184 times higher than the International Space Station. They are testing the life-support systems in deep space for the first time with a crew—a vital step before we return to the lunar surface. 🛠️🛰️
History in the making! 🚀 Three days ago, the #ArtemisII mission successfully lifted off from Kennedy Space Center. Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen are currently in High Earth Orbit, preparing for the most ambitious crewed lunar flyby since 1972.
