Good Morning #Canada
The 1,609 km long Churchill River is #9 on our countdown of #CanadaRivers. The river is located entirely within the Canadian Shield, flowing from Churchill Lake in northern Saskatchewan through Manitoba to Churchill, the #PolarBear capital of the world. Along the way it drains a huge watershed of 281,300 km2.

With the decline of the beaver population, trappers looked for new routes to gain a stranglehold on the competition, and #CanadianExplorers pushed west and north, exploring and mapping Canada’s wilderness. The Churchill River formed a major part of this "voyageur highway" in the 18th to 20th centuries after Dene people showed Peter Pond the portage connections between the Hudson Bay watershed and the Clearwater — Athabasca — Mackenzie rivers, which flows into the Arctic Ocean.

The Peace River is #8 on the #CanadaRivers countdown. At 1,923 km, it originates as the Finlay River in the Rocky Mountains of northern British Columbia and flows to the northeast through northern Alberta, ultimately joining the Slave River, a tributary of the Mackenzie River. The combined Finlay–Peace–Slave–Mackenzie river system is the 13th longest river system in the world.

The Peace River valley is also the battleground for the Site C Dam, a proposed BC Government #Hydroelectric project that would submerge 125 km2 of Class 1 to 7 agricultural land, along with 100 km2 of forested land. Farmers and Indigenous people have been fighting against the project for decades.

For lucky #7 on our countdown of #CanadaRivers we return to the Saskatchewan River. Including its tributaries, the North and South Saskatchewan rivers, the total length reaches 1,939 km until it drains into Lake Winnipeg. The river, like the province of Saskatchewan, takes its name from the Cree word kisiskāciwani-sīpiy, meaning "swift flowing river", and provided an important route of transportation for First Nations.

We have arrived at the top 5 in the #CanadaRivers. The Slave River flows for 2,338 km from the Peace River in Alberta to Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The river's name is thought to derive from the name for the Slavey group of the Dene First Nations, Deh Gah Gotʼine, in the Athabaskan languages. The river is home to the northernmost river pelican colony in North America and their sanctuary is closed to humans from Apr 15 to Sep 15.
