Easter test weekend, initial findings. 😎

On Fedora 44 Beta GNOME Edition, the file manager crashes every time I try to access my NAS. There are also frequent freezes with apps that weren’t included by default and were installed later.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS also comes with GNOME 50, and unlike Fedora, it already includes kernel 7.0, which is great—especially for the latest hardware. This beta also seems to run more smoothly and stably than Fedora’s beta.

However, it’s impossible to install or get Flatpaks to work, even though I installed the feature myself.

It was also absolutely impossible to install the Nextcloud client, neither as a Snap nor as a Flatpak. I couldn’t get AppImage to start, even after making it executable.

Nevertheless, both distributions already make a great impression and leave me wanting more as soon as they become stable. Ubuntu, in particular, has positively surprised me after many years; major strides have been made, whereas with Fedora, hardly any major changes are noticeable—they’re more under the hood. 👍

@unixviking I've not yet tried the Fedora 44 Beta, but I have experienced the issues with Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage on the Ubunut 26.04 Beta. I am sure they will get them worked out before the stable launch.

With both distros, I think we're looking at two very good releases soon. 👍️

@cmccullough They've always managed to pull it off so far. 😉

Ubuntu has always been a bit of a no-go for me, if only because of its reputation as a “newbie distro” and, above all, because of its constant solo ventures or the perpetually outdated and poorly maintained packages. But at least 26.04 looks really good—a brand-new kernel and lots of new programs, with the old baggage thrown out… they’re finally on the right track.

@unixviking It's been the same for me with Ubuntu, too.
