I saved a doomed Windows laptop by embracing Linux

My laptop was supposed to be obsolete without Windows 11, but Linux helped me rescue it from the landfill — and you can use it to save your laptop, too.

@dallo Every laptop we've had in the last 10 years gets a second life as a Linux machine. Starting to do the same for my relatives. We have saved hundreds if not thousands of euros by continuing to use those laptops beyond the planned obsolescence date set by Microsoft or Apple. My daily driver is 11 years old and runs Linux Mint like a dream.
@dallo It's not just old hardware though. I saved a laptop on with an 8th gen Intel, Win 11 on an HDD made it all but unusable. It's not exactly snappy on Fedora KDE, but it doesn't take 5 minutes to open Dolphin.

Anybody got a copy of that article I don't have to create an account for? I'm dying to get started, but I know less than nothing.

@dallo @Zebadiah_Carter The page headers obscured some text on every page, but it was good enough to get the gist. Thanks!

Fantastic! Thanks Friend!

@dallo I just upgraded a Dell inspiron i5 with 8Gb RAM from Win 10 to FreeBSD. Runs much faster now.
@dallo i am still using a 15 year old laptop which runs just fine for every day work with linux.
@dallo This article is paywalled.
@dallo Have been running openSuse Tumbleweed on a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 for a few years now — I fervently dislike Windows, having been a Senior IT manager in a large organization. But recently it started getting very slow to the point of dispair. Replaced the old rusty HDD with an SSD, upped the memory from 4GB to 8GB (the maximum) and it runs like a dream again. Total outlay, €165…

Bought my new laptop this january (just before prices have gone to hell) a brand new Thinkpad E16 Gen 2 with an AMD powerful APU (a R7 7735HS) and 32 Gb RAM plus a 1Tb SSD. Bought it without any Windows (price done 250€) and installed Linux Mint tight away.

Everything was recognized instantly, even my Brother MFC2710DN. And, yes, thanks to the Radeon 680M included in the APU, I can play with Skyrim LE or Fallout New Vegas.

Cherry on the cake : 7+ hours on the 57wh battery (not in game thought). Can't wait to buy new SSDs for my gaming rig.

@dallo Yes, I purchased my laptop as used one 7 years ago and installed Linux Mint: very nice!
