We’re all paying too much for our #glasses - it’s a total scam. Your $400 designer glasses and lens cost between $8-$15 to make. Thanks to Reddit u/sappk for the following deep dive: “…EssilorLuxottica owns a lot of brands. But laid out together the scope is genuinely staggering. They own Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Costa Del Mar. They manufacture for Prada, Chanel, Versace, Armani, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany, Michael Kors, Coach, Valentino, Tory Burch. Your "Prada glasses" were made in the same Luxottica factory as everything else with a licensing sticker on the temple. They own LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut (3,100+ stores), Pearle Vision, Target Optical, Glasses.com, EyeBuyDirect. €27 billion annual revenue. 18,000+ stores. 150 countries.” #monopoly #eyeglasses #capitalism

Painting with a bit of a broad brush on your prices there; some luxury frames and lenses cost quite a bit more than $15 to make. And EL is a giant, but hardly a monopoly. Generally, though, you have the right gist.

> Your $400 designer glasses ...

That is what any brick & mortar will charge for their cheapest pair of plastic frames. Nothing "designer" about it.

@CharlieMcHenry That's how they can afford to give you free exams, which is the most important part.
