To any #video #codec expert on the Fediverse:

Can we expect #AV1 to replace #H264 any time soon? What is holding it back and by whom / why?!

https://www.tomshardware.com/service-providers/streaming/h264-streaming-license-fees-jump-from-100000-to-4-5-million

Firm quietly boosts H.264 streaming license fees from $100,000 up to staggering $4.5 million — backbone codec of the internet gets meteoric increase, AVC hikes follow disastrous H.265 licensing increases

Existing licensees are grandfathered.

Tom's Hardware
@wlaatje It is heavily used by YouTube. It should also be used by Facebook and Netflix and others. The main obstacles for wider adoption is availability of HW decoders in TVs, computers, smartphones, etc. And maybe the threat of lawsuits by patent owners like it is happening in case of Dolby vs Snapchat.

@multi_flexi thank you Jaroslav! Great pointers, I will dive into the Dolby case and hardware adoption.

Maybe you could help me with this: if YT, FB and Netflix is using it heavily, how do they overcome HW issues? Is it about availability of HW at consumer side or internal HW for encoding material?

@wlaatje well mainly consumer decoders. Google was the earliest adopter, the very high quality content on YT is only available in AV1 and VP9. Smaller providers wait. The lack of HW decoders is partially overcome with efficient SW decoders like Dav1d. That is useful just for lower resolutions and not suitable for battery powered devices.
AV1 HW decoders have been available in all new GPUs, mobile SoCs and TVs for few years now. H.264 will be with us for legacy reasons for some time for sure.
@multi_flexi thank you Jaroslav! With that info I will also dive into #PeerTube and #ffmpeg plans and already compatibility and capabilities!
