“Wetland Island and Fog” — Tule fog mutes the wetland landscape beyond reed-covered islands.

Fog can make photography wonderful… or difficult when I photograph migratory birds in California’s Central Valley. There are practical issues, such as driving on roads that are dangerously obscured, or not being able to see the birds in the murk. It is cold and damp. But I love the atmosphere that tule fog brings to this landscape, and that’s why I keep going back…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/04/03/wetland-island-and-fog/

@gdanmitchell I really like your photos! But the irregular frame always triggers my inner Monk! 😅 Besides that, the photos on Mastodon are always too small anyway, so a little bit less frame would enhance the viewing expirience I think.

@hendrikk — There is no right answer to this presentation issue, so I’ll at least explain.

One reason for the square frames is that I share dailyphotographs in a variety of places beyond Mastodon. I can’t format them separately for every app or website, so the square option is a compromise.

As to frames in general, they have two other purposes. One is to separate them from surrounding text — again think of all of the different places I post, not just Mastodon — for example in search engine results. A second factor is, in fact, branding — for better or worse they visual distinguish my photographs from the mass of unframed work on the web and social media.

I wish that there was a simple way (as there is with my prints!) to control the presentation of my work uniformly regardless of which service they appeared on. But there isn’t, so this is my best compromise. (And, of course, those who are deeply interested in my photography can and do get prints… :-) )

I appreciate your understanding.
