The Luxon Government is choosing roads over people and oil over our future. Making public transport free is the fastest way to slash emissions, ease the cost-of-living crisis, and stop our dependency on expensive, dirty fuels.

Except, the main reason people don’t take public transport is either because it doesn’t go where they want, or it doesn’t run frequently enough. If you don’t fix those problems, making it free will only marginally increase ridership.

What we need is investment in our public transport networks, and cycle infrestructure. But, yknow, roads are more their thing. Apparently we’re a country of cars not humans. @greenpeace

@greenpeace No, making public transit good and worth taking is the fastest way to slash emissions. Public transit is already stupid cheap relative to owning a car. The problem is that public transit is often not competitive on time, reliability or convenience, so it needs to be better. If reducing the fares reduces the funding to maintain or improve the quality of service, reducing the fares is counterproductive.
