Just heard back from Councilor Candace Avalos after I wrote suggesting renaming César Estrada Chávez Boulevard to Union Avenue, instead of another excessively long, personality driven name, and they seem receptive to it.

#Portland #CésarChávez #Labor

@BalooUriza why not 39th? Didn’t MLK used to be called Union?
@DulceMaria @BalooUriza another option I’ve seen: something like Farmworkers Blvd

@DulceMaria Railroad Avenue was renamed to Union in the 1930s, and during the anti-labor 1970s, renamed to MLK.

Honestly with how complicated Portland is, I'm not exactly against stripping all names and just letting everything be unnamed, instead referred to by block number like most Mormon Belt cities are.

@BalooUriza really? I thought Union was renamed to MLK in 1989. Just thinking that a lot of folks still living in Portland may still think of it as Union due to the number of years they knew it as that name, so naming a different street Union may be confusing.
@DulceMaria The ball got rolling in the 70s but apparently they didn't make it official until 89. Either way, the Union signs have been gone since the late 90s, anybody old enough to be confused by it at this point needs to Get Over It since it's getting very close to being as dead as Railroad Avenue was when it got renamed MLK.
@DulceMaria That said, I'm not on board with selling naming rights, so it's still Civic Stadium and it's still Hillsboro Stadium and it's still Rose Garden Arena as far as I'm concerned.
