Spanish #conquistador #JuanPonceDeLeón first came ashore in #Florida, the peninsula he named and charted by sea, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1513. He returned in 1521 with settlers, but the Indigenous #Calusa resisted forcefully and Ponce de León was fatally wounded, dying in Cuba.
