The Awkward American

A recent conversation with friends brought up traveling in Europe these days.

"Just say you're Canadian" my old Canadian hockey buddies used to tell me.

I love them for the kindness behind their suggestion but hiding where I'm from because I'm deeply ashamed of our current leader just doesn't feel like something I could do.

It makes me feel like I'm dishonoring the memory of some remarkable people in our history just to avoid potential awkwardness.

@mmiasma I've heard "I didn't vote for him." merchandise is a popular way to head off some issues.

@wulfric @mmiasma

I like "I hate him too".

@wulfric

Yeah - I've heard the same. We were planning a trip up into Calgary and a friend who just returned said that Canadians are treating us far better than we probably deserve (because they're Canadians probably).

I imagine most Europeans are as understanding regarding our national embarrassment. A shirt would just save them the trouble of guessing where I stood on the issue. ๐Ÿ˜†

@mmiasma @wulfric
Let me know if you do head to Calgary. I don't travel out and back from home nearly as frequently as I did in my younger days, but it's a neighbouring city that I visit from time to time.
I have an American friend visiting Korea. My Canadian flag stickers and pins were very popular souvenirs. I'm not sure how the same items from their soon-to-be-former ally would be considered.

@EllenInEdmonton @wulfric

We will definitely let you know if we decide to head up. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

@mmiasma I did that when W was in office. Iโ€™m too embarrassed to even go abroad now.

@lydialurch

We're pondering a trip into Canada. A friend just recently returned, and said they treated him as nicely as Canadians treat everyone by default. But I don't know if I'd want to do Europe right now.*

* Especially since DHS might read my toots and deny me re-entry into my own country. ๐Ÿ˜” ๐Ÿ˜†

@mmiasma Or worse. Yes indeed, you're correct in using extreme caution right now.

@lydialurch

Good point about the "or worse".

With my old age and shaky grasp of reality, I wouldn't survive an internment camp.

@mmiasma That kitty would be list without you too.
@mmiasma @lydialurch
That's pretty much the main reason I'm worried when US folks come to Canada. Getting back into US could be very dangerous to many folks under current fascist regime.
@PhoenixSerenity @mmiasma I think there was an incident with someone who was coming from Canada but I'm not sure if they were from US or Canada. I only know I'll be sticking close to home for the duration.

@lydialurch @PhoenixSerenity

There have been a couple stories, this one stuck in my mind. They were Americans (but of course, we all _know_ what flags they tripped <sigh>)

US Citizen Detained After Visiting Canada: โ€˜Treated Like a Criminalโ€™

Bachir Atallah and his wife, Jessica Fakhri, say they were stopped by CBP in Vermont on Sunday while returning from a brief family trip.

@mmiasma @PhoenixSerenity I think the one I was referencing was a woman, but the fact that there are more than one is beyond disturbing.
@mmiasma Oh, in certain situations I have zero problem telling people I'm Canadian. It is the orange clown and his enablers who are dishonoring the memory of the remarkable people in our history. The thing that's important to me when I travel is to stay safe. And I also really don't want to hear people complaining to me about how fucked up my country is since every vote I've cast would have prevented this, had the person I voted for won. #NotMyFault

@mlanger

Absolutely all good points. Safety is the priority in travel.

My country has done some shameful things. Hell, the list is long and embarrassing, but I'm stiff-necked enough to want to accept the shame of the bad as long as I get to be proud of the good.

I guess I should probably just stay home for awhile and make it easier and safer on everybody. โค๏ธ

@mmiasma

No, you are not dishonoring the memory of the remarkable people in our history.

The murdering genocidal discriminatory deviant narcissistic pedophile that is president is incapable of feeling shame.

When Americans stop feeling shame for what this slimeball does in the name of OUR country, THAT will be the ultimate dishonor to our nation's heros.

@mmiasma It's good for people outside the U.S. to learn that actually the majority of us want him gone. In any way possible.
