alright my friends. this weekend. it's happening. the big desktop will go from #Windows to #Linux.

I've done a lot of prep work over the past few days (extracurricular file backups, a software audit,...), and I've been super happy with #PopOS on my old-a$$ laptop from grad school, so - I think I'm ready ๐Ÿ™Œ

Looks like the old AMD GPU in here won't be much of an issue as the drivers are included **in the kernel**!? What is this magic ๐Ÿคฏ

last time I tried to use Linux w/ a GPU (I think it was #Ubuntu or #Mint) was over a decade ago and I'm fairly certain this snazziness didn't exist back then. it was a huge mess to even just get the wifi going lmao.

I figure a long weekend is the right time for this. esp as the weather is still hot garbage round here too.

famous last words... wish me luck ๐Ÿ˜‚

@robyn good luck!!!! may you be set free
@phillmv @robyn Yes! This is the way to look at it. It's *your* computer, probably for the first time in your life.

@robyn You got this!! ๐Ÿ™Œ Can't wait to hear about it!

(Migrating the big desktop from Windows 10 to Linux is on my to-do list here too, โ€ฆsometime aha!)

@robyn you'll do great and I think you will like Pop! OS.

@trippgs oh I *already* like Pop, it's been the sole OS on my old laptop for I think over a year now!

This is the "big" switch though - the main desktop with all my writing, website, blog, daily org stuff on it. So a bit more high-stakes.

but I am confident that if things *do* go sideways, I have enough backups and system recovery drives around me to salvage most everything ๐Ÿ˜„

@robyn Ooooh have fun!!

@robyn Switching to Linux is a bit of a gateway drug. You start for the privacy, but you stay for the freedom. Itโ€™s addictive in the best way possibleโ€”once you realise you actually own your computer again, thereโ€™s no going back.

@robyn My coworkers convinced me to do this too. I ran Mint off a USB for a while and then moved that to a 0.5TB SATA. Video editing and accounting keep me from going fully over for now. My dual boot is on the Mint side by far the most.

Their next step is to get me back into Python and use PyCharm. I did write a few lines and use git to sync Mint and my RPi uses of the code. Baby steps to becoming a hacker

@robyn ooooOOOOO!!!! congrats, i hope it all goes well for you!!!! always a little scarier swapping your daily driver over
