🚨 OPT OUT & say NO to #GitHub using your interaction data to train & improve its AI models. 🚨

GitHub is the next company to choose to opt you into having your data used - by default. 🚩

Opt out in Settings --> Copilot --> Features.

Under "Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training" -β†’ Disabled.

It recently announced that if you do not opt out before April 24th, it will use your interaction data when using Copilot.

Or if you have time to migrate, some alternatives would be GitLab, Codeberg
or if you want to self-host https://gittea.dev/ is a great option as well.
Gitea

Gitea (Git with a cup of tea) is a painless self-hosted Git service written in Go

Gitea
@The_Universality Precisely. The only safe way is to opt out of all of GitHub. Have been using GitLab myself, and it works fine.

@martinvermeer
I'm self-hosting gitea, and it is a great experience so far.
It has a few limitations but I won't hit them with my usecase.

You just need a server, which might be the biggest problem for some.

@The_Universality I am considering trying gittea. Do you personally use it? Any drawbacks you have encountered?

@stoev
Yes I use it. For my needs it is more than enough. Unlimited users, UI admin panel, 2FA, issues, and more.

I hadn't encountered any issue so far.

I'm using the debian repo, tho. Not sure how well it does with docker, but I would expect no difference.

@The_Universality Thanks for the response.

Maybe I can finally give it a try.

Have a nice day!

@Tutanota joke's on them. If they use *my* code, we'll see model collapse in 3 weeks
@Tutanota Are you solely relying on GitHub yourself? Why not on any alternative if you want to promote freedom and independence of Big Tech?

@kris

Yes @Tutanota I thought that's cheeky ! You're on GitHub yourself !!

@Tutanota yes codeberg is the way. (Or gitea self hosted if codeberg isn't an option)
@leanderlindahl @Tutanota Codeberg runs Forgejo (https://forgejo.org/), which can be self-hosted, too. And there are many other instances that run Forgejo, not only Codeberg: https://codeberg.org/forgejo-contrib/delightful-forgejo#public-instances
Forgejo – Beyond coding. We forge.

Forgejo is a self-hosted lightweight software forge. Easy to install and low maintenance, it just does the job.

@Tutanota Already founding my new repositories in Codeberg..
@Tutanota Better yet, if possible, leave github.
@Tutanota Is there any way to disable AI training on the GitHub app?
@Tutanota First LinkedIn and now Github, setting a timer on #privacy is so a Microslop thing to do
@levi It's terrible that they do auto opt in.
@Tutanota Just stop using GitHub. If you have to use it, disable Copilot. If you have to turn those settings off it's because you didn't turn Copilot off in the first place (here those were already off by default, since I disabled Copilot).

@Tutanota
I went one further: deleted my GitHub account. I was keeping it for visibility, but as I'm no longer a developer,at as well not give them the satisfaction.

Also, just to stick two fingers up, changed all the lines of text and code with the word "slop" just to poison their training data πŸ˜†

@Tutanota I deleted my interactions as far as possible and aftwards my account. Case closed.
@Tutanota Very bold of you to assume they will respect your choise. I am almost sure they will use the data anyway.
