#Sweden goes #BackToBasics, swapping screens for books in the classroom

"In 2023, the Swedish government announced that the country’s schools would be going back to basics, emphasizing skills such as #reading and #writing, particularly in early grades. After mostly being sidelined, physical #books are now being reintroduced into classrooms, and students are learning to write the old-fashioned way: by hand, with a pencil or pen, on sheets of paper. The Swedish government also plans to make schools #CellphoneFree throughout the country."

@DoomsdaysCW As someone who has gotten back into classrooms recently, this would all be a painful bandaid to rip off, but once it was gone and the pain subsided, it would improve things beyond measure.

@DoomsdaysCW This is good, but writing a whole article about problems in the Swedish schools without mentioning the neoliberal shitshow that funnels municipal money to venture capitalists by privatising the profits and socialising the losses is negligent.

This is the main reason the quality of the Swedish school has declined.

(Edit: mobile phone free is not necessarily good)

@DoomsdaysCW this is amazing but the only part I disagree with is making schools phone-free. Students need a way to contact their parents that doesn't rely on school staff and doesn't act as an instrument for cyberbullying, so I'm all for allowing only 3310-style phones instead. (Attended multiple schools where staff gaslight and bully children, and sexual assault and mental health issues are completely disregarded - had to call or text to be picked up more than once. This is in England so it's considered normal.)
