“It will just open up naturally,” Trump says about the Strait of Hormuz. He also once said, at the beginning of the pandemic, that COVID would end by itself. "One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear"
@anneapplebaum I'm not surprised. But I am very, very sad.

@anneapplebaum

The flu almost disappeared in 2020 when everyone started wearing masks.

What virus could make COVID end?

Airborne transmission? and something we have a vaccine for, but are naive about?

@anneapplebaum
Maybe Hormuz needs ivermectin.

@cynblogger @anneapplebaum

Just pump some hand disinfectant straight into the sailors' bloodstreams and they will be able to pass through it unscathed.

@anneapplebaum magical thinking at it's finest 😏
@anneapplebaum I don't know why the military don't refuse to take orders from this imbecile.

@anne_twain @anneapplebaum

Because military has to obey to whoever people chooses as their boss.

Even if he is an idiot.

It is the people's work to choose somebody who is not an idiot.

Military making political decisions is never good news for democracy.

Worst of it, those people has already elected twice this same idiot.

How many idiots will they choose after him?

@anneapplebaum … and about climate change ”it’ll change back”, IIRC.
@anneapplebaum How were 77 million Americans so deceived by this conman---or without decency & compassion? Big sigh.
@jerrygoff @anneapplebaum
I offer no answer because I've never been able to conceive of one.

@jerrygoff
human psychology. People still underestimate the insane power of well thought out propaganda in moving entire societies in one or the other direction.

It's not Trump. It's the people who bought all the communication channels and then funded the continuous onslaught of disinformation and manipulative imagery through those channels.

Seriously, quite a big part of Trump voters live in a different (albeit fake) reality.

@anneapplebaum

@jerrygoff

And to be clear: with "well thought out" I don't mean "subtle". The key factor is the volume and the repetition of simple statements to imprint brains to find it more plausible. The "illusory truth effect"

@anneapplebaum

@anneapplebaum very much like s toddler: he cannot do it himself, he does understand it is important, so he just says it often enough to make it happen. Toddlers still have magic thinking.
@anneapplebaum he also said injecting desinfectant into the human body would cure Covid. Ppl believed him and died. Same thing happening again and again: ppl die by Felon 47. In VEN, in IRN, in CUB. And the world does nothing.
@anneapplebaum Chinese ships will get through ok, but for years anything considerd as pro-USA will be a target. Maybe all tankers with “fuck trump” in massive letters written down the length of both sides might be safe?
@anneapplebaum
There’s a pattern here treating complex, high-stakes crises like they’ll resolve themselves if you just wait long enough. Whether it’s a pandemic or a geopolitical flashpoint like the Strait of Hormuz, reality doesn’t bend to wishful thinking. Leadership demands foresight, not faith in miracles.
@anneapplebaum "One day — it’s like a miracle — he will disappear"
@anneapplebaum Diplomacy would be a solution. However, cancelling existing agreements and starting a war while negotiations are ongoing does not bode well for further diplomatic efforts.

@anneapplebaum @WarnerCrocker you know, every now and then, I just get this feeling that Trump might be some sort of imbecile who was given a tremendously large amount of money by his father.

But he's the president of the USA, so I must be wrong. Right?

Right? 😔
