1973 was a weirdly big year for movie musicals about Jesus as both “Godspell” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”were released within months of each other #MusComEnt#Godspell
There doesn’t seem to be any other similarities other than being set in NYC and the musical contributions of Stephen Schwartz but “Godspell” (1973) and “The Wiz” (1978) always have very similar vibes to me #MusComEnt#Godspell#TheWiz
While “Godspell” (1973) featured members of both the 1971 Original Off-Broadway and Toronto casts only Robin Lamont reprised her role from both. She would later be a part of the 1976 Broadway cast, as well. #MusComEnt#Godspell#RobinLamont
There was a weird trend in the late 1950s-1970s where they added narration to silent films to make them more palatable to audiences who had only experienced talkies 🤢 #MusComEnt#Godspell
@analgesicsleep Two fun films. I remember being obsessed with zvictor Garber's colorful Jesus. Jesus Christ Superstar is still a favorite. I'm a non-believer but Ted Neeley's Gethsemane always gets me in the feels. No one sings it better, imho.
@ADignorantium I got to play Simon Zealotes in a local Spanish-language production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” so I studied pretty much every available recording of the show that I could find. Ted Neeley’s performance was definitely a standout
