The centimeter wide rock layer that records the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary that ended the rein of the dinosaurs. (It's the brown layer between the coal & light claystone layers.) It was created by the fallout of a 12km impactor that created the 250km wide Chicxulub crater offshore of the Yucatán Peninsula. The layer contains shocked quartz & an anomalous concentration of the element iridium marking an extraterrestrial impact.

(Raton, New Mexico.)

@elaterite Nice. That layer seems to be just about everywhere.

I would have liked to have had it pointed out to me the time I was in Raton, but one of the most memorable things was experiencing a long moment of complete and utter quiet, which was actually a little unnerving!

@croyle @elaterite We visited Raton just to see what was there. While driving through, we happened to notice a sign for some local trails, followed the sign to the parking area and kiosk, and that's how we found out that Raton was where they first identified the iridium layer. What a fun serendipitous discovery that was! Nice town to visit, too. and pretty trails.

New Mexico is so cool! And nice n quiet. Don't spread word cc @sofonofos

@plantfeest @akkana @elaterite @sofonofos There is a lot to like! Pity that I only lived there for half a year.
@croyle @akkana @elaterite @sofonofos Only visited for two weeks, but had the best host. Fully intend to return for month 😇
@plantfeest @akkana @elaterite @sofonofos Many times of year are unique there, but my favorite time of year was in the fall when the smell of roasting chiles was in the air!
@croyle @plantfeest @elaterite @sofonofos Fall is everybody's favorite season here, for so many reasons, but the roasting green chile is definitely a factor!
@akkana @croyle @plantfeest @sofonofos Can't wait to attend the Chile Festival in Hatch this year! 🔥🌶️
@elaterite @akkana @plantfeest @sofonofos Jealous! I hope my local supermarket has a truck again this year where they do the roasting fresh in the parking lot.
@croyle @akkana @plantfeest @sofonofos I always roast at home and revel in the aroma that fills my house! And I'm particular about how it is done. They need to be as fresh as possible and I cool them on cookie racks. Then pop the racks in the freezer and when frozen bag them up. Ya, it takes up more space in the freezer that way but it's easy to pluck one out of a bag, nuke for ~35sec, and it peels much easier than doing it the traditional way.

@elaterite @akkana @plantfeest @sofonofos We've roasted them at home too, but the big fresh roasting in the parking lot is so much easier and I can still enjoy the smells.

I usually slice them up and put them in rough serving sizes into sandwich freezer bags, then toast them into the chest freezer to be added to various things as needed, so we have a very similar process. :)

@croyle @elaterite @plantfeest @sofonofos We used to buy a box every year, but it was so much work to skin/de-seed that many chiles all at once that lately we've been buying them in smaller quantities and roasting them at home in the air fryer, which does a fine job. We can still enjoy the smell outside grocery stores, though!
@akkana @croyle @plantfeest @sofonofos Hm, another reason to look into getting an air fryer (again), it roast chiles! I've tried to research them but there are so many choices I give up. I like the idea of the ones with a rotating basket inside. But they aren't very common.

@elaterite @akkana @croyle @sofonofos inside chili tips! So here for it 🤍

Tho I must object to buying new appliances

#objection

@plantfeest @akkana @croyle @sofonofos That's a good point. The fewer appliances, the better.
