In just two days, humanity is heading back to the Moon! 🚀On April 1, 2026, the Artemis II mission is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center. This isn't an April Fools' joke—it’s the first time in over 50 years that humans will journey beyond low Earth orbit. Here is a thread on why this is a massive milestone for our species: 🧵👇 https://youtu.be/QXqlziZV63k

The Crew of Pioneers 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀
This 10-day mission carries four incredible astronauts who are about to make history:

Reid Wiseman (Commander): A veteran who has already spent 165 days on the ISS.

Victor Glover (Pilot): Making history as the first person of color to leave LEO.

Christina Koch (Mission Specialist): The record-holder for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, now the first woman headed to the Moon.

Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist): Representing the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Jeremy will be the first non-American to ever travel to the Moon. 🇨🇦

Why Artemis II Matters 🌕
Unlike Artemis I (which was uncrewed), this is the ultimate "stress test" for the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

Life Support: For the first time, Orion's environmental systems will be keeping humans alive in deep space.

The Trajectory: They’ll use a "free-return trajectory," meaning Earth’s gravity will naturally pull them back if something goes wrong.

The Distance: They will travel farther from Earth than any human in history—roughly 10,300 km (6,400 miles) beyond the far side of the Moon. https://youtu.be/IqcuV11xp0U

The "Moon Mascot" 🧸
The crew isn't going alone! They’re bringing "Rise," a small plushie designed by a student from California. As the "Zero-G Indicator," Rise will be the first to let the crew know they’ve officially reached weightlessness. It’s a beautiful nod to the "Earthrise" photo from Apollo 8.

For the Fedi-Space Fans 🔭
Mastodon has always been a hub for space enthusiasts (shoutout to the #Spacestodon community!).

Whether you’re on astrodon.social, spacey.space, or your local instance, this is our "Apollo moment." We’re moving from visiting the Moon to staying there. Artemis II is the bridge to Artemis III—the actual landing.

Godspeed, Artemis II! 🌠
To Jeremy Hansen, Reid, Victor, and Christina: You carry the dreams of a planet with you. Canada is beaming with pride to see a Maple Leaf heading toward the lunar horizon.

Wishing the entire NASA and CSA team a "nominal" countdown and a safe splashdown in the Pacific.

Ad Astra! 🚀🌕
