last week, anti-trans laws were passed in Portugal.

parliament revoked the 2018 law that gave us self-determination of legal gender and change of name.

in addition they also passed UK-style censorship laws banning schools from talking about gender, and UK-style laws banning the prescription of puberty blockers and hormones to trans children.

this is the first time Portugal has taken away human rights since it became a democracy in the 1970s.

@typeswitch shit. Do you have a news article or reference for this that I can read and share? I haven’t seen anything in my usual (very limited) news outlets.
PSD, Chega e CDS-PP revogam lei da identidade de género de 2018

Foram aprovados três projetos-lei para alterar a lei da identidade de género, com votos a favor do PSD, Chega e CDS-PP e os votos contra das restantes bancadas.

@typeswitch thank you! This really sucks :(

One of the reasons I was glad to move to Portugal in 2020 was this stuff seemed to be moving in the right direction here.

@cloudthethings i think and hope it will get better again but the right wing backlash and far right push is strong right now. i guess the hope i cling to is that PS is opposed to these changes and will overturn them if given the chance.

@typeswitch yeah, I agree - that’s got to be the hope. The presidential elections were pretty scary but the second round was definitively in favour of “not Chega” so I’m hoping that’s something.

Madeira (where I live) was scarily close though.

@cloudthethings @typeswitch

The law allowing free determination has been revoked, but this will hopefully cause backlash from the medical community who now have to approve every "request".

The censorship laws will still have to go through a freedoms and rights committee and have approval from the President, so still some hope they won't pass.

@jcast thank you. I’ll try to keep an eye on this, not that I can influence or vote on it anyway as a non-citizen. /cc @typeswitch
@typeswitch I'm sorry. And yeah, this shithole in the sea has a lot to answer for.
@typeswitch i am sorry :(
it really is infuriating to see european countries follow into the moral panic one by one...
@typeswitch that's awful :( sending solidarity and my loudest "fuck transphobes" from nyc
@typeswitch The country's politics are really going down the drain unfortunately :( Obviously we're keeping hope in things and doing what we can but the larger and larger push to the right and conservativism is extremely upsetting. Although, I think this is a global trend in general unfortunately.
@typeswitch I am deeply ashamed of this bullshit
@typeswitch I’m sorry! Portugal seemed like one of the few countries going in the right direction! 🤬
@typeswitch for fucks sake, it really seems like this worldwide political enshittification doesn't spare any country. The US, the UK, recently also India.

I really hope Germany doesn't get a anti trans law anytime soon. If it would come I would want to commit suicide. Unfortunately I have access to neither guns, pentobarbital (drug used to euthanize pets), spots to hang myself or any other method that is effective and doesn't require fighting my stupid meat prison's survival instinct head-on. I don't want to be forced to suffer.
@LunaDragofelis @typeswitch  I believe things will get better. I know its not my place to say that but we can pull through.

@LunaDragofelis
Really, you should not. Whatever happens, whatever law gets or does not get passed, you in the worst case, can still get out of the country, protest, take a lawsuit to European (human rights) court etc.

Also, if you feel really feel like doing that seriously, I can only strongly urge you to seek help. Try https://www.telefonseelsorge.de/ for example. We lost good fedi people already and it's *never* good in this case.

You are a valid! No matter what politics say! ❤️

@typeswitch first of many unless people wake the fuck up and start sabotaging the status quo :/
@typeswitch What the fuck Portugal...
@typeswitch So, there, my future vacation plans went down with a flush. Fuckers.

@typeswitch this kind of things are why it leaves me flabbergasted every time I see somebody saying anything along the lines of "How is possible X thing happens if we are in the Y year"...

As if we weren't living all the time just one bad weekend away from chaos.

@typeswitch nooo, not you, too, Portugal.

@typeswitch "this is the first time Portugal has taken away human rights since it became a democracy in the 1970s."

This might be the clearest example of how transphobia is a tool being used to push fascism i've ever seen

@typeswitch thats complete shit, same shits happening here in India, self identification is being taken away, fucking bullshit.
