Okay, this is probably the dumbest question ever, BUT..can I transfer my domain to another registrar when there is a live site on it?

Because..I'm NOT paying that. Just..NO.

#Domains #Namecheap #WTF

Domain update: I've purchased a new cheaper domain and will be creating a new Mastodon server soon. I've also transferred my .com out of Namecheap.

#Porkbun made all of this so easy and much less costly than that stupid renewal would have been.

Very happy.

@j I'll be moving my domain again this year so I appreciate the report-out for Porkbun! Glad it's working out.

@rpmik @j

I've been a porkbun customer for a few years now and am generally happy with them. They've ramped up their marketing of tools for reselling domains lately, which is a bit scummy, but otherwise the best registrar I've ever used (although that's a low bar).

@j Yes, just make sure that your DNS on the new registrar matches your existing DNS. Some providers automatically change the nameservers to their own when transferring the domain in. As long as it's the same, your site should stay up.

And yeah, the renewal price is a bit high since the wholesale price is $25. Porkbun may be cheaper ($33.47) but YMMV.

@padraig @rpmik Thank you for the responses. I was just reading over at Porkbun about how to pull this off, and I can probably do it. Maybe. 😛

I'm also considering just getting a new, cheaper domain and starting over with Mastodon.

*sigh* Why does everything have to be so complicated?

@j I ask that same question every day
@j yes. Use the exact DNS settings at the new registrar. The nicer ones allow export and import of DNS configuration files that seem.. standard?
