Ooof, 9 years worth of recall.

"Nexgrill is voluntarily recalling over 10.2 million metal wire bristle grill brushes sold at The Home Depot stores and online between 2015 and 2026. Small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes, stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery. You should immediately stop using the recalled brush.

Nexgrill is offering a full refund in the form of a gift card ($5–$15 depending on model) after a successful claim."

Product Safety Recall - Nexgrill

@ai6yr I've heard that this can be a potential issue for *any* wire brush used on a grill.

@Nead @ai6yr

OK to scrub grill with 1/2 onion on a fork.

@ai6yr I once got dinner free at a restaurant b/c a piece of wok brush got in my food. (I thought it was a hard piece of broccoli and to be honest if I weren't in chorus, I'd have been in a "hope somebody knows Heimlich" situation.
@ai6yr ( I managed to orchestrate my tonsils to find the thing and cough it out. HEads were turned, tho' I tried to make every breath I took "yes I just inhaled!!" but I seriously would have been happier if oh, somebody would have stood up and been at the ready. I wasn't going to look at it - gross! - but LOL gross? LOOK AT IT and OH!! WHat the F***?"
I had to pay for my beer and they didn't bring me change for that.
Dudes, no tip, and no return. It's been 3 different restaurants since then...)
@geonz Yeah, that's no good!!! Yikes.
@ai6yr But ya know? the "be glad to be alive" moments are good lessons. They're why I still have masks and stuff.

@ai6yr I had a Weber brush, because it was a big brand and seemed to be well made. I think it *was* well made, but all of these are destined to be recalled. I got a notice because my large online retailer remembered my purchase. I figured it was time to change over, even though I think my methods were safe, and it was a good brush.

My advice, if you get one of the more modern continuous spiral ones, is to get one with ranks of spirals. They don't work quite as well so you need more brush.

@ai6yr and you need to put more weight into it

great-scrape
@ethergear @buckfiftyseven @ai6yr A wooden scraper like these work very well. I made my own out if cedar. Not as nice looking as these though.
@ai6yr where I come from, we use onions, not brushes, to clean the grill.
@desertsquare Onions are a great idea!
@ai6yr @desertsquare https://www.jjgeorgestore.com/the-smarter-scrubber/ is a pretty cool project. Destin (Smarter Everyday on YouTube) has some videos on what it takes to do manufacturing like this in the US. They're even sourcing all the sub-components in the US.
The Smarter Scrubber

The Smarter Scrubber is more than a grill brush; it’s a statement about the return of American craftsmanship. Inspired by a commitment to rebuild U.S. manufacturing

@Affekt @ai6yr @desertsquare that's a chain mail shop rag. Love it but wtf.
@ai6yr Friend lost a doggo b/c of those little wires and a summer of BBQing
@ai6yr I recommend one of these laser cleaners... Will guaranteed not leave metal pieces. Many other useful applications in your house. Might remove tattoos and skin.
@carsten "WHY DID THE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE JUST VAPORIZE?!?!?!?" "Ooops, set the power up too high! SORRY!"
@ai6yr when I was working in the 3D printing lab we shared space with the laser lab.... You don't want to set the laser too high. Bad stuff happens. You are lucky if you only vaporize the next door neighbor.
How I Got My Laser Eye Injury - Funranium Labs

It has been brought to my attention that I have never actually written this story down before, merely told it in person to many students for valuable lessons and also for laughs over cocktails. It is a litany of bad ideas from several people that all came together at once to reach out and zap … Continue reading "How I Got My Laser Eye Injury"

@clark @ai6yr oops, yes, you really want to make sure that you know what you do with these...
@carsten @ai6yr what kind of laser are y'all playing with?! I'm looking to put a 3kw fiber laser on an old CNC plasma table we have 🤣
@pixelkeen @ai6yr only 3kW?
@carsten I'll be lucky to afford that! lol
@pixelkeen at the moment I only have one of these small K30 CO2 laser cutters, upgraded with a slightly stronger tube. Enough for my hobby needs.
@carsten respectable. if you're mostly engraving, that's plenty. I'm sure it cuts good up to 3mm as well
@pixelkeen Yes, works well on 3mm acrylic and up to 5 mm plywood, might need a few passes

@carsten

Willy-nilly sales of class 4 lasers?

So people can pew-pew rust off of things?

It's like we are magically jumping back in time to when there were few functioning safety regulations.

What a messed up state of things.

One of my most interesting cases has a lesson that could save your life! #case #medicine #hospital

@MsMerope Oh god, remind me to never use one of those brushes ever

@ai6yr surgery

$15

Huh.

@ai6yr hashtag Grosse Pointe Blank plot point
@ai6yr I’ve never used a wire brush on a BBQ and never will. Flat scraper for the big chunks, the rest is supposed to be there for rust protection and umami.
@ai6yr The only time I grill these days is when cooking over an open fire. I just throw the grills on top when starting the fire. Everything gets burned off by the time food gets put on the grill - no brush needed.
