Throughout China’s many dynasties, the imperial court, where all the toadies, lickspittles, liars, backstabbers, opportunists, and lunatics vie for the Emperor’s attention, has pretty much always been a miserable affair. Honestly, that misery applies to any sufficiently large royal court.
