@Ronnie @cetan That’s a nice one! I love drop point blades but that one’s a thumbstud opener and I absolutely cannot work those, or thumb hole ones. Spyderco look ugly as fuck to me. The militaw’s blade shape is what I would call perfect, but it has a hole (😕) and is a front flipper (😒). For the price I’m going to force myself to learn the latter and if I get cut AS USUAL so be it.

@dhry @cetan I’m good with the thumb stud openers now but it took a bit to get used to. I keep looking at a Benchmade like that Kershaw. I happen to he able to get a lot of knives for our cost plus 10% so I don’t pay those prices. I wouldn’t look at a Benchmade otherwise.

If I had to pick a favourite “desert island” knife it’d be the Kershaw Link. Fuck I love mine.

@Ronnie @cetan Yeah no way. Walmart have an Ozark Trail knife that is almost identical and budget as hell. Took the budget knife world by storm. Do a search on Reddit for “wugout” which is what they’re calling it. I have two - they’re not too bad at all but I could do without the bright orange scales.

@Ronnie @dhry if you don't mind the used market you can get a bugout or mini bugout for pretty good prices.

Give it a try. Front flippers are somewhat different from regular flippers. The flipping motion totally different. You might actually like it.
Also - check out Kizer’s website. They have a webshop with hard to beat prices.

@josh9 Easy. One for EDC - every day carry, just in my pocket at all times.

The other 45 are for ibbidy, bibbidy and schwinkleschwonk.

In all seriousness though, they're cheap and fun to look at. We incorporated filipino knife fighting into our martial arts curriculum several years ago, I bought a knife and was weirdly hooked. I clean, oil, sharpen and fidget with them. And look at them. I'm nowhere near peak freak with them though. Not even close.

@dhry Fair enough!! Im sure the answer is no, but have they ever flipped open while in your pocket? I’m quite a clumsy guy and I think that’d be the sort of thing to happen to me lol I got a Milwaukee box cutter years ago and I enjoy using it here and there, nowhere as cool obviously but I can see the appeal

@josh9 No. They don't do this. There's actually a law in California (I'm not in CA) where if a blade can be opened by a push button, flick of the wrist (your example would qualify here) etc, then carrying one with a blade 2 or more inches long is a crime - https://www.shouselaw.com/ca/defense/penal-code/21510/ - "switchblade".

All of my blades except one (a Schrade Viper) open by using a thumb or another finger to manually flip it open - finger flipper, front flipper and so on. None of them open via gravity or wrist flick.

§ 21510 PC - Switchblades - California Law & Penalties

California Penal Code § 21510 PC prohibits you from carrying, possessing in public, selling or giving away a switchblade knife. This crime is a misdemeanor.
