Typing re-imagined as a dynamic context-free experience for maximum user adaptive input flexibility, total surface interaction and pure visual feedback.
@NanoRaptor i imagine each row is just one super long key that would be able to detect where you press down on it
@mjdxp
Maybe something like old cellphones, where you have to tap multiple times QWER(T) ASDFG(H) QW(E) (Q) QWERTY(U) QWERTYU(I) ZX(C) ASDFGHJ(K) ....
@NanoRaptor
@NanoRaptor Uncle Clive Sinclair would have approved, I guess.
@NanoRaptor Each line is actually a Touch Bar, right? 😬🫣
@peter_sc @NanoRaptor thisnis something I’d trust Apple to make alright. Enshittification pure.
@NanoRaptor I know you were aiming for Touch Bars maybe, but my brain immediately imagined MacBook Neo with a membrane keyboard à la Atari 400.
@NanoRaptor The F key row should also be a continuous surface. Who hasn’t longed for a F4.2 function key?
@tml @NanoRaptor “press F𝜋 for help”
@tml @NanoRaptor
All keys and words should be analog scale and not descreet and digital...
Because things are often quite hard to describe...

@NanoRaptor

What people really mean when they say "touch typing"

@NanoRaptor when Apple makes this real I am having you arrested
@pileofgarbage @NanoRaptor Oops! All TouchBars!
@cholling @NanoRaptor @pileofgarbage Not quite! The function keys are still physical keys.

@snowfox @cholling @NanoRaptor @pileofgarbage

If this were real, ALL the keys would be touchbars, except the `Fn` key.

@cholling

I read that as "Oops, all AI Touch bars" and that is what we need - #AI enshittifiction

@NanoRaptor @pileofgarbage

@pileofgarbage @NanoRaptor imagine having apple's lawyers intervene for you in your war crimes trial though
@NanoRaptor I hope it comes with a feature to switch the keyboard layout randomly after every typed key.
@NanoRaptor To reduce eye strain while looking at input panels in the dark, we made touch panel black. We also removed pabel separators for smoother experience
@NanoRaptor @MarkAssPandi actually, have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FingerWorks. Its TouchStream was basically a keyboard just like that. And Apple ended up purchasing their patents. The typing experience was mixed :-}
FingerWorks - Wikipedia

@NanoRaptor Thank god for the alt text. I had no idea what I was seeing

@NanoRaptor

stop giving those idiots ideas....

@NanoRaptor honestly the way apple is headed (aesthetics before usability), this isn't beyond possibility 😬
@NanoRaptor “Seamless design” 😆

@NanoRaptor

Honestly not much more cursed than the original 2015 MacBook keyboards.

Dear Apple,

Key travel was NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MEASURED in Angstroms.

@rl_dane
May as well type on a touchscreen. Or a ZX81...
@NanoRaptor

@ddlyh @NanoRaptor

Remember the keyboard from Russia in the Mid/Late naughties that had mechanical keys, but the top of every keycap was a small OLED screen? "Das Keyboard," or something?

I dare Apple to put that on a friggin' laptop. 😁

@rl_dane @ddlyh @NanoRaptor well, you’ll need that for the regression into hieroglyphic‡ writing most of society is currently rushing towards…

‡) called “Emoji” these days, but same difference, except instead of no less than three perfectly workable hieroglyphs, they use the aubergine emoji to hide the meaning and annoy cooks

@rl_dane @ddlyh @NanoRaptor also, why does FixedMisc have so much nicer crocheting symbols than Gentium?

(Though, I suspect that Gentium just lacks it and Firefox falls back to DejaVu Sans, given the look.)

@mirabilos @ddlyh @NanoRaptor

It's also useful for accents, alternate layouts,and international modes!

@rl_dane @ddlyh @NanoRaptor these are largely static, and you can print them on keycaps.

BTDT. It works better if the grid around the keycaps is in a decidedly distinct colour, e.g. light compared to black keycaps with white enlasering.

@rl_dane @ddlyh @NanoRaptor It doesn’t work as well when the keys and the grid are both dark, as the individual keycaps don’t have a distinguishable border, like in this photo (ignore the cat lying across the table, it’s the lower laptop’s):

@mirabilos @ddlyh @NanoRaptor

Wow, that's fancy.

Also, ignore a cat?? Do you know me? Have we ever spoken before? 🤣😻

@rl_dane
That would be amazing! Even better to use e-ink screens!
@NanoRaptor
@rl_dane @ddlyh @NanoRaptor "Das Keyboard" was a keyboard with unmarked keys. russian + oled sounds like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimus_Maximus_keyboard (bonus: the WP article also mentions existing eink models and Apple's patent office posture in that space)
Optimus Maximus keyboard - Wikipedia

If it’s analogue and I can play the keys like 5 otamatones I’d be curious. 😆
@NanoRaptor typical Apple, just copying Lenovo's innovative no key keyboard technology
@th @NanoRaptor In Italy they released the gnocchi keyboard.
@NanoRaptor I saw a rumour that the Neo 2 is going to have this keyboard but without the backlighting, to save on costs.
@NanoRaptor in the next iteration the latin letters will be replaced with newly designed proprietary apple glyphs.
@NanoRaptor
Can it run five Dooms?

@NanoRaptor when do we get the Mixtur Trautonium version?

@colinstu @NanoRaptor Vibrato could only make my code better.
@NanoRaptor given the tactile response of the average Mac laptop's keys, this wouldn't feel appreciably different
@NanoRaptor This is basically a fretless electric guitar, right?

@cstross @NanoRaptor Nice! You could have accents just above their letters, and umlauts slightly to the left or right.

We could use different phonetic systems as layouts. So many possibilities!

@slothrop @cstross @NanoRaptor Everybody's text and code will suddenly have the endearing qualities of a jr. high school string orchestra.
@cstross @NanoRaptor I had a "well, ackshually" reply typed up about MIDI controllers, but... no, you're right. That's basically what it is: a keyboard only Guthrie Govan could love.
@cstross @NanoRaptor When you want to hit the characters in between.
@NanoRaptor Now I want the equivalent of a microtonal keyboard where all the accented characters get their own, smaller keys
