The UK tech energy grab: how AI data centres are delaying the building of homes

Artificial intelligence infrastructure is being handed priority access to Britain's overwhelmed electricity grid, pushing housing down the list. But as the US shows, there's an alternative: make Big Tech pay for the power it needs. Report by Nicole Kobie

The Nerve

@junesim63

With solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage, the government could legislate on any new data centre being self-powered.

Site any new data centre near the coast with a desalination plant and mandate that theyโ€™re self-sufficient for water too.

Competition for limited resources solved!

@TCMuffin

Simple, but this government is in the pockets of the techbros, so no, they won't.

@junesim63 @TCMuffin
The trouble with tech bros is that they lack other intelligence compounded by their wealth isolating them from mosts folks lives
@Christo_459 @TCMuffin
I think they also lack empathy, so even if they were aware of how most of us live, they wouldn't care.
@TCMuffin I've been saying the same. Place the energy infrastructure cost AND environmental costs squarely on these people's shoulders and maybe this experiment suddenly isn't viable.
@junesim63 "By using AI/LLM you leaving some homes without power."
I might've concept of that somewhere in back of my head but never thought in this specific and destructive way AI/LLM is.

@junesim63

This is f**ing insane.

There is infatuation with tech and shiny, but this is something else. It is dangerous.

@junesim63 take a page from #virginia. #ai #datacentres and do not give up local control for wannabe capitalists #labourparty national sellouts
@junesim63 as in - learn from our mistakes. hard to do when you have 70% market share of global data traffic but we are learning now in #virginia we have reached #peakdata
