The United States is dropping land mines around villages in Iran. Images posted to social media Thursday show what experts said are U.S. land mines dispersed across a residential area in southern Iran, in what appears to be the first instance in more than two decades of American forces using the weapons.

The photos show American BLU-91/B anti-tank land mines, which are released from an aircraft as part of the Gator mine scattering system, according to four munitions experts who reviewed the imagery at The Washington Post’s request. The United States is the only party in the Iran war known to possess the system.

LAND MINES ARE A WAR CRIME! What in the actual fuck are we doing here? This is a violation of law, of sense, and of humanity. Den Hague for everyone involved.

The United States commits war crimes against its own citizens in the streets. Tear gas is a chemical weapon and it is a war crime. They're using much worse gas on citizens too. Our government bombed a girls school and commercial fishing boats. They're committing so many war crimes we can't keep up with them. And they have no accountability. Accountability will happen in the future with documentation and when they are out of power. That day cannot come soon enough.

On a battlefield, yes. Used for civilian riot control it is not even remotely a crime, much less a war crime. In fact, tear gas is used by police all around the world for civilian riot control.
Also not illegal for the military to use it for riot control either- whether in a civilian or a military context. Hurts a lot less than a bullet, in any case.

It was used on everyone peacefully protesting the killing of a teenager including elderly and children.

@lemgandi @MissConstrue Interestingly enough, they need to do that in order to comply with treaties. If they didn't self-destruct, they would only be allowed in fenced and marked areas according to CCW.

Not to diminish from all the war crimes that have already happened, but this thing is a surprisingly grey area as far as war crimes go. The weapons and their use is not really a war crime, but dropping them on villages might count as civilian targeting.

there may be an attempt here to segregate zones, in the hope of internal conflict, or at a minimum force protection for troops on their way -- using civilians (coastal high ground with a 'missile to the straight view').

In 2024, (latest year analyzed)landmines and other explosive remnants of war killed or injured 6,279 people globally, the highest annual total since 2020. This included 1,945 deaths and 4,325 injuries.

Civilians made up 90% of the victims, with children accounting for nearly half (46%) of civilian casualties.

Landmines get hidden quickly by dust. These munitions are not stable and cause enormous damage over a wide area. I believe one might consider doing the teeniest bit of research before commenting on the mental acuity of children forced to walk through a minefield to get to school.

Reality/Fact check:

you'de be hard pressed to detonate an anti-tank mine with anything weighing less than a tank...

what they DO need to be careful about is the auto self destruct (safety!) feature.. is it set to 4 hours, 24 hours, 15 days? But that's a problem for the profesionals- Iranian EOD crews.. not civilians. Well, maybe the stupid civilians, but anyone with a brain will steer clear of one if they find it.
