According to several major news organizations, Trump's signature is now "going to appear" on U.S. currency, and the signature of the Treasurer is going to disappear.

It's like magic. No one ordered that to happen, apparently. It just will.

@gleick if he goes ahead and does that, and there's no authorizing statute, does that mean... the money is illegitimate? (not an american, I have no idea about american laws in this regard)
@gleick Does that mean that Trump is now the underwriter for all US currency rather than the treasury?

@peterbroks @gleick

came here to ask that question myself

@gleick In other news, pre-Trump c-notes just rose over par value.

@gleick

He's such an asshole

@gleick

I'm just going to write "is a convicted felon and pedophile" on any bills with it I see.

@gleick this makes me happier still that I've moved to a zero-cash lifestyle. Yes, I know the negatives of using corporate payment conduits, but I choose to avoid this embarrassing arselicking as long as possible. Wondering, also, if anyone knows whether they're messing with the USD $20 because I still own a Harriet Tubman ink stamp for correcting my $20 bills. Might be time to brush that off… #USCurrency #currency #USD #TFG

@wendinoakland @gleick

When I search “Harriet Tubman ink stamp”, I get many places online to *buy* the stamp —no thanks Google, but not the reasoning *behind* it.

Luckily there’s Wikipedia, oh wow.

@gleick It’s real, and I have rarely read as much sicophantic bullshit as in the treasury press release: https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0425

America is insane.

Treasury Announces President Donald J. Trump’s Signature to Appear on Future U.S. Paper Currency

WASHINGTON – In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump’s signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency along with the Secretary of the Treasury, marking the first time in history for a sitting president.“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.”“As the 250th anniversary of our great nation approaches, American currency will continue to stand as a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people under President Trump’s leadership,” said Treasurer Brandon Beach. “The President’s mark on history as the architect of America’s Golden Age economic revival is undeniable. Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate, but also well deserved.”###
