The continuing demolition of the 175 year old Union Corner Building after the devastating fire which destroyed it. In the background is the distictive Ca'D'Oro building, which was severely damaged by a fire in the 1980s, but was successfully resurrected afterwards.

Yes, this was made much easier by its iron frame and facade, but this is only one of a number of examples of Glasgow buildings which have been restored to their former glory after such incidents, so it can be done (the Grosvenor Hotel being another prime example). The question for the Union Corner Building is whether we still have the will to do such things.

@thisismyglasgow I think we know the answer. It's not even the will, we live in a metaphorically gaslit age where we are told there is not enough money to do things, whilst there is to build lots of DCs so people can create images for memes and billionaires can play NASA.
@thisismyglasgow There seems to have been a lot of building fires in the city. Does it just appear that way or is there an aspect of the city that makes it prone to fire, whether that's poor enforcement of fire regs or some other reason?
Mind you, this last one had no loss of life, so perhaps it's not to do with fire regs.
@withaveeay There are a lot of building fires in Glasgow. What was unusual about this one is that is was still occupied rather than ebing empty. There's always a lot of apeculation about why this is the case. Part of it is because there's a lot of empty buildings, and part of it is because Glasgow has a lot of older stone buildings with internal timber structures and few fire breaks so when a fiew starts it's very hard to stop. Whether there is anything beyond this, I don't know.
@thisismyglasgow Thanks for the insight.
@thisismyglasgow There was that awful year when the GCA was gutted, a world-renowned bird watching centre in Orkney, and the Crannoch Centre all were put on fire. It felt like agent from down south were determined to destroy all our most unique tourist attractions.

@thisismyglasgow it's amazing how you can walk past a building like that many times and not really give it the attention it deserves. Incidentally maybe it was a GOON that managed to start that fire ;-)
