In this stage two topics of some recent Kpop posts of mine converge -- berets and Le Sserafim.

I'd forgotten how addictive the bouncy bass of this song is, and I had also forgotten that this particular stage is a beret lover's dream. The choreography is a delight, with some moves that verge on the graceless but succeed in being charmingly quirky.

Of course, there is much more to say; let's leave aside the painful subject of Garam and her departure from the group, and turn instead to...

I'm not posting this on account of a belief on my part that I am revealing to Kpop fans a hitherto little known connection between the two songs.

On the contrary, I, who learnt of this link only recently, probably belong to a minority of "Blue Flame" listeners who have long been unaware of 'American Boy".

Two thoughts occur to me.

In the first place, I find myself wondering -- and not for the first time -- how much my not having paid much attention to western popular music in recent decades has shaped or even distorted my understanding of Kpop.

In addition, I ask myself what the comparison of my response to the two songs shows me about my love for Kpop.

Part of the spell that Kpop continues to exercise on me must lie in the performance dimension, that dimension including not just the group's singing, but the dancing, styling and so on.

Some will dismiss this as a shallow fixation on "visuals", but I actually feel that aspect is one of Kpop's great strengths and attractions as a popular art form.
