Big JNews!

"#Antisemitism is on the rise. There’s a war raging in the #MiddleEast. #Passover is bearing down on us and gas prices are higher than ever.

And yet one morsel of good news came to #Jewish faithful this month: #ReesesPieces are now certified #kosher #pareve.

#OU Kosher, the largest kosher certifier in the #US, announced March 12 that the candy-coated peanut butter candies are no longer considered dairy despite packaging that labels them as such.

The implications for kosher consumers are as momentous as they are simple: Reese’s Pieces can be eaten immediately after meat — or for the deeply adventurous stomach, alongside it — without the hourslong period #Orthodox #Jews wait before eating dairy again."

Reese’s Pieces are now kosher pareve. Carnivores rejoice.

@dukepaaron Possibly the best news I’ve heard all year!
@dukepaaron “This is one of the situations where we had to think about the welfare of the Jewish people,” Elefant said. “And the welfare of the Jewish people was that they need Reese’s to be pareve.”

@littlemiao @dukepaaron

Are they also vegan now?

@celesteh @dukepaaron I wish I had a definitive answer on this!

@littlemiao @dukepaaron

They're Hershey, so AFAIK, they're not under any sort of active boycott, but the chocolate production likely included slave labour carried out by children.

Which IMO makes it not vegan because people are a kind of animal.

I don't have enough knowledge to argue in an informed way for a more expansive kosher certification process that might include this.

@celesteh @dukepaaron I only get equal exchange chocolate and a couple single source or other ethically produced chocolate brands (beyond the fair trade label which afaik isn’t very strict). So I do my best! I don’t know of kosher certification that includes such ethical concerns either. However, in this case, my understanding is that Reese’s pieces don’t actually contain chocolate. For what it’s worth
@littlemiao @celesteh yeah there's no chocolate in them. Peanut butter and candy shell.

@dukepaaron @littlemiao

Oh i got them confused with the peanut butter cups! Alas, ive never seen pieces for sale in England. I was already under the impression that they're vegan, though.

@littlemiao I don't really eat candy. Although I did have salt water taffy tonight because New England.

@celesteh

@dukepaaron #LOL
I mean awesome to clarify that but I kind of assumed they were pareve due to the ingredients.

@dukepaaron

Are they changing course about dairy equipment/"can contain traces"?

The local kashrus authority I follow has IIRC been lenient with this for quite a while.

@project1enigma I doubt that with OU but I can never follow this stuff ell enough.
