In something you don't see everyday, Apple gave the FBI the real name and email address of one of its customers using Apple's 'Hide My Email' feature. This lets you generate random email addresses to protect your privacy https://www.404media.co/apple-gives-fbi-a-users-real-name-hidden-behind-hide-my-email-feature/
Apple Gives FBI a User’s Real Name Hidden Behind ’Hide My Email’ Feature

The move isn't surprising, but shows what data is available to authorities when paying Apple customers use the Hide My Email feature.

@josephcox

Your nuance is appreciated. Glad you chose "something you don't see everyday", not "something that doesn't happen everyday".

@josephcox hide and share my email

@josephcox

I find it especially endearing that they only sell the illusion of anonymity.

@josephcox I always found it strange that people trusted Apple so much just because of times in the past when they really wouldn't have benefited from giving up user info. It was just a matter of time until giving up info wouldn't hurt them and they would do it.

If anyone is actually counting on them to help against the regime, they need to seriously reconsider.

@josephcox So not really hidden then. Grr!

@josephcox
So it’s hidden until *checks notes* the email provider gets a visit from the FBI (it did not say they’d received a court order…) because someone was using their service to threaten the girlfriend of the FBI director.

If anyone thinks any American email provider (and I suspect a bunch of foreign ones!) would refuse that, especially given the current administration, they’re high.
