On 19 April 1945, the survivors of the Buchenwald concentration camp declared: “The destruction of Nazism and its roots is our slogan. The building of a new world of peace and freedom is our goal.”

Even after more than eighty years, this pledge has not yet been realised.

A commemoration committed to this pledge should have reminded us of this.

It should remind us that, instead of demilitarisation, the German government is pushing ahead with a level of militarisation not seen for decades, and that the German government – in alliance with the USA – supports Israel’s genocide in Gaza just as much as the attacks on Lebanon, Syria and Iran, which violate international law.

Instead, the memorial sees its role as banning the wearing of the keffiyeh and using handouts to undermine protests against genocide.

Members of the VVN-VdA, the ELSC and the Jewish Voice will address this issue in Berlin on 27 March.
